Chapter 1

The cream-colored silk pajamas felt suffocating against Elain’s skin, damp with the quiet, helpless perspiration of absolute betrayal. Julian Hamilton’s voice still echoed within the vaulted ceiling of the living room, sharp and venomous, branding her as a fraud in her own home. The red welt blooming across her cheek burned beneath her fingertips, a physical reminder of how quickly a decade of devotion could be discarded. Standing just a shoulder-width behind him, Tatum smoothed the fabric of her deep red silk slip dress, her dangling diamond earrings catching the ambient afternoon light through the large arched window. Tatum’s sly smile was a silent blade, twisting deeper than Julian’s open accusations of infidelity. Elain remained seated on the curved sofa, her hand instinctively coming to rest over the gentle, undeniable curve of her abdomen. This child was Julian’s flesh and blood, conceived during a fragile reconciliation they had both believed would mend their fracturing marriage. Yet, here she was, being cast out into the chilly autumn air, barefoot and broken, while the architects of her ruin stood victorious. Julian’s broad chest heaved beneath his black suit jacket as he demanded her immediate departure, his eyes devoid of the warmth she had cherished for years. She looked past him, catching the reflection of the grand piano in the background, a silent witness to countless quiet evenings that now felt like a cruel illusion. There was no use screaming, no dignity in begging a man who had already chosen his captive audience. Slowly, deliberately, Elain gathered her shattered composure. She pushed herself up from the plush cushions, her bare feet meeting the cold hardwood floor with a quiet finality. She did not look back at Tatum’s triumphant smirk, nor did she offer Julian the satisfaction of a tearful breakdown. Instead, she straightened her posture, the silent tears continuing to trace hot paths down her pale cheeks, and walked toward the heavy oak doors. The Hamilton estate gate loomed ahead of her like the iron bars of a cage she was finally, agonizingly, being forced to leave behind.
