Chapter 7

Back inside the sprawling expanse of the Hamilton residence, the atmosphere had soured from triumphant celebration into a tense, suffocating quiet. Julian sat at the grand piano in the background of the living room, his fingers hovering over the ivory keys without striking a single note. The sprawling room felt strangely empty, devoid of the soft, domestic rhythm Elain had once effortlessly maintained. Tatum walked in, draped in another expensive silk gown, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch which she extended toward him with an easy, rehearsed smile. "You've been brooding all evening, Julian. Everything is falling into place. The board is ready to ratify the restructuring plan next week," Tatum murmured, pressing her body close to his side. Instead of leaning into her touch as he usually did, Julian stiffened, pulling his hands back from the piano. A lingering shadow of doubt had begun to take root in his mind, stoked by a brief, uneasy conversation he had earlier that day with a jittery corporate auditor who mentioned anomalies in the recent asset clearances. "Tatum... are you certain about those offshore accounts tied to the development fund? Marcus was asking pointed questions today about signature verification," Julian said, turning his head to look directly into her eyes. A micro-expression of panic flickered across Tatum’s face before her practiced sly smile reemerged. She placed a manicured hand over his chest, her voice dripping with calculated reassurance. "Darling, Marcus is just an old-fashioned loyalist holding onto the past. He’s looking for ghosts where there are none. Surely you don't doubt my loyalty after everything we've built together?" Julian looked away, wrestling with the cognitive dissonance between his deep-seated pride and the gnawing dread in his stomach. He wanted to believe her completely, because admitting she had deceived him meant confronting the horrific truth of how brutally he had treated Elain. That realization was too terrifying to entertain, so he forced the doubt back down, though the foundation of his trust had already begun to crumble into dust.
