Chapter 2

The heavy oak doors of the Hamilton mansion closed behind Elain with a hollow, echoing thud that reverberated straight through her chest. Stepping onto the paved driveway in her bare feet, the coarse gravel bit sharply into her soles, grounding her in a reality that felt increasingly like a waking nightmare. The crisp autumn wind swept across the expansive front lawn, catching the hem of her cream-colored silk pajama set and making her shiver violently. She paused by the ornate iron gates, looking out at the empty suburban street stretching into the gray twilight. No car waited for her; Julian had ensured she left with nothing more than the clothes on her back and the fragile life growing inside her. A passing taxi slowed momentarily at the sight of a distressed, barefoot pregnant woman standing outside one of the wealthiest estates in the city, but Elain shook her head, unable to afford the fare. Instead, she began walking, each step a test of endurance as the rough terrain tested her resolve. Her mind raced, replaying the vicious setup orchestrated by Tatum. It was painfully clear now that the forged medical documents and anonymous tip-offs pointing to an imaginary affair had been meticulously planted to oust her before Julian finalized his corporate succession plans. The Hamilton family empire required a clean slate, and Tatum had positioned herself to be the dutiful, sophisticated nursemaid to Julian’s bruised ego. Elain clutched her swollen stomach, whispering silent reassurances to the innocent soul resting beneath her heart. She was alone, penniless, and publicly disgraced, but a fierce, unfamiliar survival instinct began to thaw the numbness in her veins. She could not afford to collapse on the pavement. Turning the corner away from the neighborhood of sprawling mansions, she headed toward the bustling downtown district where anonymity offered a temporary shield. Every passing vehicle’s headlights sent a fresh wave of panic through her, but she kept moving, putting physical distance between herself and the monsters who had stolen her life.
