Chapter 8 - The Interrogation Room

The fluorescent lights of the precinct interrogation room hummed with a low, agonizing frequency that seemed to vibrate directly inside Julian’s skull. The metal table between him and the two detectives felt like a barrier dividing two entirely different realities—one where he was a successful CEO, a loving father, and an upstanding citizen; the other where he was a desperate criminal facing decades behind bars for corporate fraud and arson. Julian sat with his hands cuffed to the bolted steel ring in the center of the table, his dark hair disheveled, his black coat still smelling faintly of smoke from the nursery fire.
Across the table, Detective Miller tossed a thick manila folder onto the metal surface with a heavy slap that echoed sharply in the small, windowless box. The folder spilled open, revealing printed color photographs of the charred utility closet in the Sterling estate, alongside itemized bank statements detailing millions of dollars in unauthorized transfers.
"You're digging a deeper hole with every minute you stay silent, Sterling," Detective Miller said, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table. He was a veteran cop with tired eyes and a voice hardened by years of watching powerful men fall from grace. "We have the bank logs matching your private biometric key. We have your fiancee’s eyewitness statement placing you at the scene of the fire. And we have an entire corporate board ready to testify that you were funneling pension funds into offshore accounts."
"It was fabricated," Julian said for the tenth time, his voice raspy and exhausted. "Arthur Vance and his daughter engineered this entire scheme to force a hostile takeover of my company. Check the metadata on those bank logs—they were routed through a proxy server registered to Vance Enterprises."
The second detective, a younger woman named Detective Hayes, let out a cynical sigh and leaned back in her chair. "Mr. Sterling, do you have any idea how many wealthy executives sit in this exact chair and try to blame their father-in-law when their house of cards collapses? All of them. Every single one."
"Where is Clara?" Julian demanded, ignoring their skepticism. "Where is my son?"
"The boy is currently in the custody of Child Protective Services, placed in a temporary foster home pending a suitability evaluation," Detective Hayes replied smoothly. "As for your nanny, Miss Evans, she is being held in the adjacent holding cell for questioning regarding her complicity in the arson plot."
Julian lunged forward, the heavy steel handcuffs rattling violently against the table. "She had nothing to do with it! She saved my son’s life while Beatrice stood there and watched the fire burn!"
"Your fiancée paints a very different picture, Julian," Detective Miller countered, sliding a signed deposition across the table. "According to Miss Vance, Clara had been exhibiting unstable, obsessive behavior for months, culminating in today's violent outburst against the child. Beatrice claims she tried to intervene, and that you threatened her physical safety when she attempted to report the abuse."
Julian stared at the signature at the bottom of the page—Beatrice’s elegant, sweeping cursive, flawless and damning. She had moved faster than he could possibly anticipate, locking every legal door before he even had a chance to reach for the handle.
"She lied," Julian whispered, the fight finally draining out of him, leaving behind a cold, hollow numbness. "She lied about everything."

Before the detectives could respond, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung open. A young precinct guard stepped inside, whispering urgently into Detective Miller’s ear. Miller’s expression shifted instantly from professional detachment to sudden, unmistakable shock. He stood up, grabbed the manila folder, and bolted out of the room without uttering another word, leaving Julian alone in the flickering fluorescent light.
