Chapter 4 - The Financial Noose

The mention of the fiscal quarter and her family’s backing hit Julian with the precision of a calculated surgical strike. The Sterling Corporation was currently in the middle of a hostile market acquisition, heavily dependent on the venture capital firm owned by Beatrice’s father, Arthur Vance. Julian had spent the last two years trading his personal happiness, his time with Toby, and his own moral boundaries to secure that partnership. Beatrice knew this. She had weaponized her father’s wealth from the very beginning of their engagement, slowly tightening the financial noose around Julian’s neck until he could no longer breathe without her permission.

"This isn't about business, Beatrice," Julian said, though the lack of conviction in his tone betrayed the agonizing compromise tearing him apart inside. "This is about my son."

"Everything is business, Julian," Beatrice replied smoothly, adjusting her gold shoes as she regained her composure, stepping closer to him once more. She reached out, her fingers trailing lightly down the lapel of his black coat in a gesture of ownership rather than affection. "Toby is a sensitive boy. He needs a mother who understands high society, pedigree, and proper discipline. Not a nanny who coddles him and encourages his delusions."

Clara stepped forward, her face flushed with righteous fury. "Delusions? He has bruises on his shins from where she shoved him into the wainscoting yesterday! I documented every single incident in my daily logbook, complete with time stamps and medical notes."

Beatrice’s eyes flashed with a dangerous light. "You kept a logbook against me?" she asked, her voice dangerously sweet. "How utterly paranoid. Julian, do you realize what kind of unhinged liability you have living under your roof? She's building a case. Against us."

Julian looked from Beatrice to Clara, his mind desperately searching for a rational thread in the mounting chaos. "Show me the logbook, Clara."

"It’s in my desk in the nursery wing," Clara replied without hesitation. "Along with the backup flash drive containing audio files of her threatening Toby."

"Get it," Julian commanded.

Clara turned and sprinted down the corridor toward the west wing, her footsteps echoing sharply against the marble. Beatrice watched her go, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across her lips. She didn't panic. She didn't run. She simply reached into the pocket of her red velvet dress and pulled out her smartphone, tapping the screen twice before sliding it back into her pocket.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Julian," Beatrice murmured, leaning in close so her breath brushed his cheek. "By the time she reaches that desk, there won't be a single piece of evidence left to find."

Julian stared at her, a cold dread pooling in his stomach. "What did you do?"

Before Beatrice could answer, a piercing, high-pitched alarm began to wail throughout the mansion, followed immediately by the automated voice of the estate’s emergency system barking a terrifying command: WARNING. FIRE DETECTED IN THE NURSERY WING. EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.
