Chapter 5 - The Nursery Blaze

Thick, dark smoke began to billow from the archway leading to the west wing, turning the pristine white walls of the grand hallway into a murky tunnel of shadows. Toby screamed in terror, burying his face into Clara’s side as she reappeared from the smoke, coughing violently and clutching a singed leather binder to her chest. The alarm shrieked overhead, strobe lights flashing a blinding crimson that painted Beatrice’s triumphant smile in shades of blood. Julian reacted on instinct, scooping Toby up into his arms and pulling Clara backward away from the advancing wall of heat and soot.

"The logbook!" Clara coughed, thrusting the blackened leather binder into Julian’s hands. "The fire started in the utility closet right next to my desk! Someone rigged the space heater!"

Julian stared at the binder, then looked across the smoke-filled corridor at Beatrice. She stood completely untouched by the chaos, her hair still immaculate, her red dress catching the strobe lights as she watched the destruction with cold, detached amusement. She hadn't moved an inch since the alarm sounded, offering no assistance, showing no fear—only the terrifying confidence of someone who knew the exact outcome of the trap she had sprung.

"You did this," Julian shouted over the wailing siren, his face contorted with rage and disbelief as he clutched Toby tightly against his chest. "You could have killed my son!"

"I was standing right here with you, darling," Beatrice said, her voice dripping with venomous innocence. "How could I possibly have started a fire in the west wing? You’re hallucinating from the smoke inhalation. The stress of single fatherhood is finally breaking your mind."

"Get out," Julian snarled, his voice cutting through the din with absolute finality. "Get out of my house before I forget every civilized instinct I have and throw you out that window myself."

Beatrice didn't flinch. She slowly turned on her gold heels, smoothing the fabric of her long red velvet dress with deliberate slowness. She paused at the grand double doors leading to the exterior courtyard, casting one final, lingering look back at the broken family.

"You'll be begging me to come back by midnight, Julian," Beatrice called out over the blaring alarm. "Because without my father’s signature on the restructuring papers tomorrow morning, the bank will repossess this entire estate, and you and your precious nanny will be sleeping on the streets."

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, sealing her departure with a definitive thud. Julian dropped to his knees, clutching the singed logbook in one hand and holding Toby securely with the other, while Clara frantically grabbed a wet towel from a nearby washbasin to press against the boy's face. The fire suppression system kicked in overhead, drenching them in freezing water from the ceiling sprinklers, turning the grand white hallway into a chaotic scene of ruin and despair.

Julian opened the charred binder, flipping past water-damaged pages until he reached the plastic sleeves containing the flash drive. His fingers were shaking uncontrollably as he pulled the small device free from its melting pocket. If Beatrice’s father owned the bank, and the corporate restructuring was slated for dawn, they had less than twelve hours to expose the truth before their entire empire vanished. But as Julian plugged the flash drive into his damp tablet, the screen flickered to life and displayed a terrifying folder directory filled with thousands of personal financial documents—all bearing his own digital signature authorizing the systematic embezzlement of his company’s pension fund.
