Chapter 1 - The First Sieve

The echoes of Julian’s furious shout still vibrated against the vaulted ceilings of the grand white hallway, bouncing off the polished marble floors where five-year-old Toby clung desperately to Clara’s beige pantsuit. Clara rocked the trembling child, her breathing shallow, her eyes fixed on the gleaming gold shoes of Beatrice. The woman in red stood unmoved, her dark hair immaculate in its tight updo, a cruel smirk playing across her lips. Beatrice did not flinch as Julian stormed past her, his black coat billowing, his face darkened by a rage that threatened to consume him. Julian dropped to his knees beside Clara, his hands hovering over his son before gently touching the boy’s trembling shoulders.
"Toby, buddy, look at me," Julian urged, his voice cracking with a raw, protective panic that shattered the cold formality of the Sterling estate. "Who did this? What happened?"
Before Toby could form a coherent reply through his muffled sobs, Beatrice stepped forward, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She leaned down slightly, projecting her voice with calculated venom designed to pierce straight through Julian’s fragile state of mind.
"You really think he's going to tell you the truth, Julian?" Beatrice asked, her tone dripping with mock sympathy and venomous condescension. "Children mimic what they are taught to fear. Ask your precious nanny why she was screaming at him just moments before you arrived."
Clara’s head snapped up, her expression hardening despite the tears welling in her eyes. "That is an absolute lie, Beatrice! You tripped him deliberately. You watched him slide across the floor and laughed!"
"Oh, please, Clara," Beatrice scoffed, rolling her eyes with theatrical disbelief. "Do I look like the kind of woman who plays petty games with a toddler? I merely tried to catch him, and your clumsy incompetence made you shift the blame."
"You pushed him!" Clara shouted, her voice rising above Toby’s whimpers. "You said he was in your way of the inheritance!"
Julian stood up slowly, towering over both women, his chest heaving as he looked back and forth between his fiancee and his trusted employee. "Enough! Both of you, shut up!"
"Look at him, Julian," Beatrice whispered, stepping closer and touching his arm with feigned tenderness. "She’s unstable. Look at how she handles pressure. If she cracks this easily over a spilled cup of juice, imagine what she does when you're away at the firm."
"I have never harmed Toby, and you know it," Clara pleaded, her gaze locking onto Julian. "Check the security cameras, Julian. The lens points right down this corridor."

Julian turned sharply toward the smart-home terminal embedded in the wall, his finger hovering over the access button, only to freeze when the screen flashed a bold red error message: SYSTEM OFFLINE FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE.
