Chapter 3 - The Whispered Warning

Toby’s small fingers gripped the dark wool of Julian’s trousers so hard that his knuckles turned white. The boy buried his face against Julian’s knee, his small body trembling not from the fall, but from a terror that went far beyond a bumped knee or a scuffed floor. Julian knelt down once more, ignoring Beatrice’s heavy sigh of annoyance, and brought himself down to his son’s eye level. He gently peeled the boy’s hands away, holding them in his own warm palms, searching the frightened blue eyes for clarity.
"What is it, buddy?" Julian asked softly, his voice stripped of all corporate authority, leaving only the desperate plea of a loving father. "Tell Daddy what happened. Did someone push you?"
Toby darted a quick, terrified glance toward Beatrice, who stood just a few feet away with her arms crossed over her dark red velvet dress. A subtle, threatening tilt of Beatrice’s head was all it took for the five-year-old to recoil, his lower lip trembling as he swallowed hard.
"The red lady... she said if I tell, the bad men will take Clara away forever," Toby whispered, his voice barely audible over the faint hum of the mansion’s ventilation system. "She said Clara has to go live in the dark room."
The words hit Julian like a physical blow. He stood up slowly, the air rushing out of his lungs. He turned to face Beatrice, whose calculated mask of innocence had begun to crack around the edges, revealing the cold, calculating predator beneath.
"What did he just say, Beatrice?" Julian asked, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a coiled intensity that caused even Beatrice to step back half a step. "What did you say to my son?"
"He's five years old, Julian!" Beatrice snapped, her composure slipping as she raised her voice, letting a shrill note of desperation pierce the grand hallway. "Children have hyperactive imaginations. They watch too many cartoons, they invent monsters in the closets, and right now, this woman has been whispering poison into his ear to turn him against me!"
"I have never spoken a harsh word to Toby," Clara said firmly, rising to her feet while keeping a protective arm hovering near the boy. "He is quoting her verbatim. I heard her say those exact words to him yesterday in the conservatory when she thought no one else was in earshot."
"You lying little—” Beatrice lunged forward, her hand raised in a sudden, violent arc, aiming straight for Clara’s cheek.
Julian caught Beatrice’s wrist mid-air with lightning-fast reflexes, his fingers locking around her bone with a grip that made her gasp. The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the heavy, rhythmic breathing of a man realizing his entire life was built on a foundation of shifting sand.
"Don't you ever," Julian said, his voice a lethal whisper, "raise your hand in my house."
Beatrice wrenched her wrist free, rubbing her skin with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that she no longer bothered to hide. She adjusted the sleeve of her red dress, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she realized her charm offensive had reached its absolute limit.

"You're choosing a glorified babysitter over your wife?" Beatrice hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous register. "Fine. But remember this, Julian: without my family’s backing, your next fiscal quarter goes up in flames by morning."
