Chapter 11 - The Tarmac Confrontation

The wind whipped the freezing rain into a stinging mist as Julian, Clara, and Toby scrambled through a jagged tear in the chain-link fence surrounding the private airfield. The massive Gulfstream jet sat on the wet tarmac just fifty yards away, its twin jet engines howling with deafening power, kicking up a spray of water that made it nearly impossible to keep their eyes open. Julian shielded Toby’s face against his chest, shielding the boy from the punishing backdraft, while Clara held fast to Julian’s arm, guiding them forward through the blinding deluge.
As they reached the base of the rolling metal airstair, the cabin door swung open. Beatrice appeared at the top of the stairs, wearing a long trench coat over her red velvet dress, her dark hair slightly damp from the rain. She looked down at them with an expression of sheer, unadulterated shock, her carefully constructed composure fracturing instantly at the sight of the man she thought she had successfully buried behind bars.
"Stop right there!" Julian shouted over the roar of the turbines, stepping forward onto the bottom rung of the metal stairs. "The flight is grounded, Beatrice. The federal marshals are five minutes behind us!"
Beatrice grabbed the chrome handrail, her knuckles turning white as she glared down at him with a mixture of hatred and disbelief. "You stupid, arrogant fool," she screamed above the engine noise. "How did you even get out of the precinct? You were supposed to be locked away for twenty years!"
"Your digital footprint isn't as bulletproof as your father taught you to believe," Clara called out, stepping up beside Julian and lifting the precinct tablet so the glowing screen faced the aircraft door. "We have the original security footage of you pushing Toby and rigging the utility closet fire. It’s already synced to the federal aviation database."
Beatrice’s face drained of all color. For the first time since their confrontation in the grand hallway, the mask completely slipped, revealing a desperate, cornered criminal. She turned sharply toward the cockpit door, calling out to her pilot to accelerate the takeoff sequence.
"Engage the engines! Move this plane now!" Beatrice shrieked, panic cracking her polished veneer.
Before the pilot could respond, a pair of black SUVs bearing federal insignia burst through the airfield service gate, their high-beams cutting through the rain and illuminating the tarmac like a Hollywood stage. Armed federal marshals spilled out from the vehicles, weapons drawn, shouting commands for the aircraft to power down immediately.
Beatrice spun back around, her eyes wild with terror as she realized every exit had been sealed. She reached into her trench coat, her fingers frantically searching for something inside her pocket, her expression turning into a mask of pure malice.

"If I'm going down," Beatrice hissed, pulling a small, heavy silver revolver from her pocket and pointing it directly down the stairs at Julian, "I'm taking my future husband with me."
