Chapter 7 - The Vance Ultimatum

The sleek black limousine blocked the narrow private drive like an insurmountable wall of dark steel, its high-beams flooding Julian’s sedan with blinding white light. Julian slammed his foot on the brake, the car sliding an inch across the wet gravel before coming to a complete halt just feet from the gleaming bumper of the limo. The rear passenger window of the luxury vehicle rolled down with a smooth, electronic hum, revealing Arthur Vance sitting comfortably in the plush leather interior. The older man wore a tailored charcoal suit, a silver pocket watch chain glinting faintly against his vest, and an expression of supreme, untouchable authority.
Arthur didn't bother to step out of the car. He merely raised one finger toward his chauffeur, signaling for Julian to lower his driver’s side window. Reluctantly, Julian tapped the button, the glass sliding down to let in the freezing night air and the harsh glare of the oncoming police sirens.
"Running away so soon, Julian?" Arthur asked, his voice smooth, cultured, and utterly devoid of warmth. "And right before the final audit of the quarter, too. That shows a distinct lack of corporate sportsmanship."
"You set this entire thing up," Julian snarled, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned bone-white. "The rigged audit, the fake embezzlement charges, the fire—your daughter is a sociopath, Arthur, and you've backed the wrong horse."
Arthur chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that sent a chill straight down Clara’s spine from the passenger seat. "My daughter knows how to secure her future, Julian. Something you failed to do when you allowed sentimentality to cloud your judgment. You thought you could build an empire on handshakes and clean ethics, but the real world belongs to those who control the leverage."
"The board will never approve this takeover once I present the real audit trails," Julian fired back, though his voice lacked its previous certainty.
"What audit trails?" Arthur replied, raising an eyebrow with theatrical amusement. "The ones currently melting in the nursery wing fire? Or perhaps the backup files stored on your private tablet—the same tablet that just downloaded a malicious script wiping its own memory banks clean thirty seconds ago?"
Julian’s eyes widened in horror. He snatched the tablet off the center console, frantically tapping the screen. The display flickered once, flashed a brilliant emerald green, and then went completely black. Every single folder, every transaction log, every piece of evidence they had gathered had vanished into the digital void.
"You're a monster," Clara hissed, leaning across the console to glare directly at Arthur through the open window. "You're ruining an innocent family just to consolidate your own monopoly."
Arthur slowly turned his gaze toward Clara, his eyes narrowing into cold, calculating slits. "And who might you be, my dear? Ah, the nanny. A woman of very modest means playing protector to a sinking ship. Tell me, do you really think a jury of corporate peers is going to believe a disgruntled employee over the Vance family legacy? You’ll be lucky if you don't spend the next ten years defending yourself against felony arson charges for that fire."
The police cruisers finally arrived, screeching to a halt behind Julian’s sedan, their red-and-blue lights washing over the scene in frantic pulses. Four armed officers spilled out of the vehicles, hands resting on their holstered sidearms as they moved methodically toward the blockade.
"Step out of the vehicle, Mr. Sterling!" an officer shouted through a megaphone, shining a high-powered flashlight directly into Julian’s eyes. "Keep your hands where we can see them!"
May you like
Arthur rolled up the limousine window with a quiet hiss, the dark glass reflecting the flashing police lights. The limo glided forward around the blockade, leaving Julian trapped between the closing authorities and a man who owned the very ground he stood on.
