Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Broken Promise

The ambient noise of the upscale restaurant died instantly as the heavy black travel suitcase slammed against the polished mahogany wood. The silver hardware rattled against the ceramic plates, disturbing the steam rising from the gourmet fusion dishes. Trina stood tall, her cream satin blouse catching the warm glow of the wooden slat ceiling. Her breath came in measured, shallow gasps, a physical manifestation of the fury burning beneath her composed exterior.
Across the table, Ramon froze, his dark polo shirt suddenly feeling too tight against his chest. His fork hovered inches from a half-eaten plate of risotto. Beside him, Lisa shrank back into the leather upholstery, the vibrant green of her sleeveless dress stark against the pale terror washing over her face.
"Ramon, bakit nasa kanya ang bag ko?" Trina’s voice cut through the heavy silence, sharp and demanding.
Ramon swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Trina, let's not make a scene here. People are watching."
"I don't care who is watching, Ramon!" Trina slammed her hand flat onto the table, making the wine glasses chime in protest. "That bag was supposed to be packed in my apartment for tomorrow's flight to Tokyo. Why is it sitting under Lisa's chair?"
Lisa looked up, her eyes wide with a suffocating mix of panic and overwhelming guilt. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out, only a soft, ragged breath.
Trina leaned in, her gaze locking onto Lisa with an intense, betrayed expression. Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
"Lisa, ikaw ang hindi tutuloy bukas?" Trina whispered, the betrayal stinging every syllable.
Lisa finally found her voice, trembling violently. "Trina, please, let me explain. It’s not what you think..."
Trina didn't wait for excuses. With trembling fingers, she unzipped the front pocket of the suitcase and pulled out a crisp set of airplane tickets and luggage tags. She tossed them directly onto Lisa’s lap, her expression entirely incredulous.
"Mas mabuti kung hindi ka na sumama," Trina said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register.
Without breaking eye contact, Trina pulled out her smartphone and tapped the screen twice. She thrust the device forward, displaying a digital travel booking confirmation screen that detailed two passengers: Ramon Del Rosario and Lisa Cruz.

As the restaurant patrons whispered among themselves, Ramon’s phone buzzed loudly in his pocket, lighting up with a notification from a joint bank account withdrawal made just that morning.
