Chapter 7: The Settlement Offer

In May, Clara received a formal notice from the Sterling family’s chief legal counsel, demanding a private mediation session at a high-rise office in downtown Los Angeles.

Clara arrived alone, dressed in a tailored navy linen suit, carrying a slim leather portfolio.

Sitting across the polished mahogany conference table were Victoria, Marcus, and three senior corporate litigators. Victoria looked noticeably aged; the public scandal had cost her family two seats on cultural foundations and a major municipal contract. Marcus looked hollowed out, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes.

""Clara,"" the lead attorney began, sliding a leather folder across the table. ""Our clients are prepared to offer you an unconditional settlement of three million dollars, along with the full purchase value of the antique textile. In exchange, you will sign a mutual non-disclosure agreement, drop all civil litigation, and provide a joint statement affirming the incident was an unfortunate misunderstanding.""

Clara didn't touch the folder.

""No,"" Clara said evenly.

Victoria slammed her palm onto the table. ""You ungrateful little pest! We are offering you enough money to buy your pathetic little sewing shop three times over! What more do you want?""

""I don't want your money, Victoria,"" Clara replied, her voice smooth and devoid of animosity. ""And the criminal trial will proceed regardless of this meeting, because the state of California does not allow private payoffs to dismiss felony destruction charges.""

Marcus leaned forward, his voice cracking. ""Clara... please. My career is ruined. The architectural firm won't make me a partner while this trial is pending. If you ever loved me, show some mercy.""

Clara looked at Marcus for a long, quiet moment.

""Mercy is not pretending the damage never happened, Marcus,"" she said softly. ""Mercy is allowing you to face the consequences of your actions so you might finally learn how to become a real man.""

She stood up, took her portfolio, and walked out of the room, leaving the check untouched on the mahogany wood.
