Chapter 13: The Coastal Studio

Five years after that fateful morning at the Monarch Bay Resort, Clara purchased a small, weathered timber cottage on the cliffs of Mendocino, overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.

The ground floor served as her personal textile sanctuary, while the upper floor was her home.

She spent her mornings walking along the headlands with her rescue golden retriever, watching the grey whales migrate south. Her afternoons were spent at her giant wooden floor loom, weaving raw linen and merino wool with natural botanical dyes made from wild sage, elderberries, and ocean kelp.

She had found a community of authentic, creative souls—potters, boatbuilders, organic farmers, and poets who gathered on her wide timber porch on Friday evenings to share sourdough bread, local wine, and music.

She was thirty-four years old, healthy, independent, and deeply at peace.

One evening, while cleaning her studio drawers, she came across the small black smartphone she had used to record Victoria five years ago. The device had long since been deactivated.

She turned it over in her hand, feeling no bitterness, no triumph, and no lingering pain. It was simply an old tool that had served its purpose during a storm that had passed.

She placed the phone in a recycling bin, closed the drawer, and turned back to her loom, listening to the rhythmic *thump-clack* of the wooden shuttle sliding through the warp.
