Chapter 3: The Unraveling

Victoria rushed onto the platform, grabbing Clara by the arm with excessive force. ""She is having an emotional breakdown! Security, please escort Miss Caldwell to the medical suite!""
Two private security guards stepped forward, but Clara calmly raised her free hand, holding up her phone.
""If anyone touches me, you will be adding battery to a felony grand larceny and intentional destruction of historical property charge,"" Clara said through the microphone.
She turned the phone’s screen toward the giant video monitors flanking the altar—screens intended to broadcast the vows to the outer seating areas. With a single tap, she cast her screen to the system.
The monitors flickered to life. High-definition footage from the hidden security camera Clara had installed to protect her grandmother's gown played across the screens.
The audio was pristine. The entire courtyard watched as Victoria Sterling picked up heavy fabric shears from a vanity table, methodically sliced through the 1952 French lace, and sneered directly into the lens: *""Let the little orphan girl see what happens when she defies me.""*
A horrified hush fell over the crowd.
Marcus stared at the screen, then at his mother, his face turning an ashen grey. ""Mother... what did you do?""
""She baited me, Marcus!"" Victoria shrieked, all socialite composure evaporating into desperate hysteria. ""She wanted to embarrass us! She doesn't belong with us!""
Clara reached down and slipped the three-carat diamond engagement ring from her left finger. She took Marcus’s hand, placed the ring in his cold palm, and closed his fingers over it.
""You knew she was doing this, Marcus,"" Clara whispered, stepping away from the microphone so only he could hear. ""You gave her the master key to my suite this morning because she promised you a seat on the bank board if you kept me under control.""
Marcus’s eyes widened in sheer terror. ""Clara, please... we can fix this. I love you.""
""You don't love me, Marcus,"" Clara said with quiet dignity. ""You love the idea of an obedient wife who doesn't challenge your family's rot. Keep your empire. I'm keeping my soul.""

She turned around, picked up the shredded silk of her grandmother’s dress from the floor, and walked back up the aisle alone.
