The Golden Seam

With the restitution funds and generous private grants from patrons who had seen the museum exhibit, Clara established *The Living Seam Foundation* in Oakland, California.

The foundation was housed in a renovated two-story brick warehouse with skylights that flooded the workrooms with natural sun.

Its mission was simple yet radical: to provide free professional training in textile restoration, garment construction, and traditional hand-embroidery to women transitioning out of domestic violence shelters, rehabilitation centers, and economic hardship.

Every student was given a dedicated sewing station, a complete kit of professional brass shears and needles, and a personal mentor.

On the first day of orientation, Clara stood before fifteen women of various ages and backgrounds.

She held up a simple square of unbleached linen that had been cut straight down the middle.
