Chapter 1: The Severed Seams

The Pacific ocean breeze drifted lazily through the open balcony doors of the bridal suite at the Monarch Bay Resort, rustling the sheer linen drapes. Yet inside the penthouse, the air was dense, toxic, and utterly devoid of warmth.
Clara stood by the foot of the king-sized bed, her knuckles white around her smartphone. The lace bodice of her own contemporary gown clung tightly to her frame, but her gaze was pinned to the white duvet.
Spread across the coverlet were the dissected remnants of her late grandmother’s 1952 hand-sewn heirloom wedding gown.
It had not been accidentally torn; it had been executed. Straight, deliberate cuts from heavy fabric shears had severed the Belgian lace sleeves from the corseted bodice. The vintage silk skirt had been sliced into jagged ribbons, laid out across the mattress like pieces of a desecrated puzzle.
In the corner near the gilded floor mirror stood her future mother-in-law, Victoria Sterling, flanked by her two daughters, Evelyn and Beatrice. All three wore matching shimmering champagne-taupe gowns. Beatrice still had her manicured hand pressed against her throat in feigned shock, but Victoria’s mouth was set in a thin, unapologetic line.
""Clara, darling, you are being hysterical,"" Victoria said smoothly, smoothing the front of her gown. ""It was an outdated, moldering rag. I told you three months ago that a bride marrying into the Sterling family does not walk down the aisle in second-hand polyester.""
""It was pure silk,"" Clara whispered. Her voice shook, but not with fear. The trembling was the vibration of a bridge just before it collapses under excessive weight. ""It was the gown my grandmother wore when she survived the post-war reconstruction in France. She spent forty years saving it for me.""
""And now you are free of the burden of living in the past,"" Victoria retorted, checking her diamond-encrusted Cartier watch. ""The Vera Wang gown I purchased for you is hanging in the closet. The press is already lining the lower terrace. Marcus is waiting at the altar. Put on the proper dress, wipe your tears, and let us get through the ceremony.""
Clara looked at Victoria, then at Evelyn and Beatrice, who exchanged smug, conspiratorial glances.
Clara raised her phone. On the screen, a small red recording indicator blinked out. Beneath it, the live-stream backup to her private cloud drive completed its upload.

""You ruined my heritage,"" Clara said, her voice dropping into a register so cold that Victoria’s eyes flickered with the first hint of unease. ""Now face the law.""
