Chapter 9 - The Stairwell Echo

The heavy metal door of the maintenance stairwell groaned on its rusted hinges, swinging open just enough to reveal a sliver of fluorescent-lit concrete steps inside. The rain outside continued to batter the loading dock roof, a dull, relentless roar that made every nerve in Julian’s body hum with electric tension.

Clara stood frozen, her arms locked straight, the suppressed pistol leveled dead-center at the opening.

"Step out where we can see you," Clara commanded, her voice devoid of any hesitation or fear.

A slow, heavy drag of a shoe echoed on the steps. A moment later, Marcus Sterling stumbled out into the loading bay. His immaculate grey suit was ruined, drenched in a mixture of rainwater and dark blood soaking through the right shoulder of his jacket. His face was pale, his lips pulled back in a grimace of sheer agony.

Marcus clutched his bleeding shoulder with one hand, leaning heavily against the concrete pillar for support. He took a ragged breath, spitting a mixture of saliva and blood onto the floor before fixing his cold eyes on Julian and Clara.

"You... you led me right into it," Marcus wheezed, a bitter, broken laugh escaping his throat.

Julian stepped around the stack of crates, approaching his former partner with cautious steps. "Who did this to you, Marcus? Was it David?"

Marcus sneered, his knees sagging slightly as he slid down the pillar until he sat flat on the damp concrete. "David is a rookie playing a amateur game. No... it was the board. The entire executive board of the firm. They knew about the offshore accounts from day one. They used us—all of us—as lightning rods to drain the pension funds while they engineered a federal bailout."

Clara lowered her pistol just an inch, though her eyes remained sharp. "If the board orchestrated the bailout, why did you steal the flash drive?"

"Because the drive contains the master cryptographic signature of every single board member," Marcus coughed, wincing as a fresh wave of crimson spilled between his fingers. "It’s not just twenty million dollars, Clara. It’s a multi-billion-dollar pension heist. And they don't leave loose ends."

Julian knelt down beside Marcus, ignoring the ruined fabric of his tuxedo pants as they soaked in the dirty puddles. "Where are they, Marcus? Give us the names."

Marcus grabbed Julian’s lapel with a surprising burst of strength, pulling him close. His breath smelled of iron and copper. "They are right above us, Julian. On the executive floor of the annex. They’re hosting a gala right now to celebrate the successful acquisition of your assets."

Before Julian could answer, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the top of the ramp leading up to the street.

The heavy security grates at the entrance of the loading dock began to descend automatically, grinding against the concrete tracks with a deafening screech. They were being sealed inside.

Marcus let out a weak, rattling sigh, his grip on Julian’s lapel suddenly loosening. His head slumped sideways against the concrete pillar, his eyes staring blankly at the dark puddles.

"Run," Marcus whispered his final word, the sound barely audible over the grinding roar of the descending security gate.

Julian stood up abruptly, looking back at the exit. The iron gate was halfway down, leaving only a narrow gap of light.

Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed Julian by the arm, dragging him toward the private elevator hidden behind the industrial crates. "The maintenance lift. It’s the only way up to the executive floor before they lock down the building."

They sprinted toward the elevator doors just as the security gate slammed shut with a definitive, earth-shaking crash, plunging the loading dock into total darkness.
