Chapter 6 - The Cellblock Transfer

The sirens wailing outside the federal holding facility signaled the total collapse of Marcus Sterling’s meticulously constructed empire. Julian watched from his seat as Marcus scrambled out of the interrogation room, dropping his manila folder in his haste. The table remained quiet, save for the rhythmic buzzing of the overhead fluorescent lights.
Ten minutes later, two armed guards entered the room, unlocking Julian's handcuffs without a word of explanation. They didn't return his personal belongings, nor did they offer an apology. Instead, they unceremoniously escorted him down a sterile, white-tiled hallway toward the underground transport bay.
The air in the garage was thick with exhaust fumes and the damp chill of the autumn night. A black armored transport van idled near the exit, its diesel engine rumbling heavily. Julian was pushed into the back compartment, where a solitary figure sat on the metal bench opposite him.
It was Clara. She wore a standard orange jumpsuit, but her posture was upright, and her dark hair fell in neat waves around her shoulders. She looked remarkably composed for a woman who had just been arrested for corporate fraud, arson, and federal hacking.
As the heavy metal doors slammed shut, plunging the interior into a dim amber glow, Clara looked up and offered Julian a small, knowing smile.
"You cut it close," she said quietly, her voice steady.
Julian slid onto the bench next to her, checking the interior security camera mounted in the corner. It was dead—its little red recording light unlit. He leaned in close.
"How did you bypass the federal firewall from a county jail cell?" Julian whispered, genuine amazement bleeding into his tone.
Clara tilted her head slightly. "Who said I did it from the jail cell?"
Julian stared at her, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. The woman arrested outside their apartment wasn't Clara at all; it was the same professional decoy from the restaurant, wearing Clara's clothes and a silicone mask. Clara had slipped away into the crowd during the chaos of the apartment fire, using the distraction to infiltrate the federal data terminal hidden beneath the port authority warehouse.
"The decoy," Julian breathed. "She took your place in the cuffs."
"She was well-compensated," Clara replied smoothly, sliding a small, encrypted flash drive out from the hem of her orange jumpsuit sleeve and pressing it into Julian’s palm. "And Marcus is currently driving straight into a trap of his own making."
Before Julian could ask what she meant, the transport van lurched violently, tires screeching as the driver slammed on the brakes. Shouts echoed from outside the vehicle, followed by the unmistakable sound of automatic weapons being unholstered.
The rear doors were wrenched open from the outside, flooding the van with blinding white headlight beams. Standing in the opening was not a federal agent, but David Vance—Julian’s estranged younger brother, whom everyone believed had died in a private plane crash five years ago.
David lowered an assault rifle, a cold, calculating grin splitting his scarred face as he looked directly at Julian.

"Hello, big brother," David said, racking the bolt. "Did you really think you could steal my company and walk away?"
