Chapter 11 - The Chairman's Gambit

The cold steel of Arthur Sterling’s suppressed revolver pressed hard against Julian’s ribs, a sharp, undeniable anchor in the glittering, champagne-soaked ballroom. Around them, the classical string quartet continued to play a lively Vivaldi concerto, completely drowning out the lethal confrontation unfolding at the edge of the dais. The wealthy executives laughed and sipped their drinks, entirely oblivious to the fact that a man was holding a gun to Julian's side a mere ten feet away.
Arthur’s face remained a mask of polite, grandfatherly benevolence, his eyes locked onto Julian with chilling calculation.
"You've been a persistent thorn in our side, Julian," Arthur murmured softly, his voice barely audible over the ambient chatter of the gala. "Marcus was always too emotional, too prone to theatrical outbursts. But you? You actually figured out the architecture of the fund. It’s almost a shame to waste such a sharp mind."
Julian didn't flinch, keeping his right hand resting lightly on the edge of the podium, mere inches from the USB port holding the encrypted flash drive. He cast a quick, sideways glance toward Clara.
Clara stood casually beside the podium, her hands tucked neatly inside the pockets of her black blazer dress. Her expression was utterly serene, as if she were waiting for a waiter to bring her a fresh glass of wine rather than standing in the crosshairs of a cartel-level conspiracy.
"You think killing us here, in front of hundreds of witnesses, is going to save your empire, Arthur?" Julian asked, keeping his voice carefully measured. "The moment that drive connects to the terminal, an automated broadcast transmits every single offshore ledger to every major news outlet in the country."
Arthur let out a low, dry chuckle. "Let it broadcast, Julian. Do you honestly believe a federal judge or a compliant regulatory board is going to prosecute a phantom network owned by shell corporations that legally don't exist? Power doesn't hide behind firewalls. Power writes the firewalls."
Arthur tightened his grip on the revolver, shoving the barrel harder against Julian's ribs. "Now, remove your hand from the podium and turn around. Slowly."
Julian slowly lifted his fingers off the wooden surface, the flash drive remaining safely in the port. He began to pivot his body as instructed, his eyes fixed on Arthur’s weathered face.
In a flash of blinding movement that defied her calm exterior, Clara’s hand whipped out of her blazer pocket. She didn't draw her pistol. Instead, she hurled a heavy, diamond-encrusted champagne flute straight into Arthur’s face.
The glass shattered against Arthur’s temple with a sharp crunch, sending a spray of golden liquid and crystal shards flying across the podium. Arthur stumbled backward, grunting in surprise and pain, his grip on the revolver momentarily loosening as he raised a hand to wipe the blood from his brow.
Julian didn't hesitate. He slammed his fist straight into Arthur’s jaw, sending the elderly chairman sprawling backward over a velvet-roped stanchion and crashing onto the polished marble floor.
The commotion finally punctured the insulated bubble of the gala. The string quartet ground to a sickening, discordant halt. Dozens of wealthy guests turned around, gasping as they stared at the chairman of the board lying flat on the floor of the ballroom.
Before security guards could converge on the dais from the ballroom exits, Clara slammed her palm down onto the large physical override button on the podium.
The massive digital screen behind them flickered violently, cutting away from the stock graph to display a pulsing red warning banner: SYSTEM COMPROMISE: UPLOADING GLOBAL LEDGER.
Arthur pushed himself up from the floor, blood trickling down his cheek, his face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. He screamed at the approaching security detail.
"Shoot them! Shoot them both!"

Before the guards could draw their weapons, every single light in the grand ballroom suddenly snapped off, plunging the entire floor into absolute, suffocating darkness.
