Chapter 12 - Darkness in the Ballroom

The sudden, catastrophic blackout plunged the sprawling executive ballroom into pitch-black silence. For one agonizing heartbeat, nobody moved. Then, panic erupted like a wave. Wealthy executives and high-society socialites began screaming, scrambling blindly in the dark, overturning crystal-laden tables and expensive champagne towers as a stampede toward the grand stairwells began.
Julian stood frozen beside the glowing red upload bar on the podium screen, which continued to tick upward at a rapid pace: 78%... 81%... 85%...
"Julian, move!" Clara’s sharp voice cut through the chaos from somewhere to his left.
A deafening bang echoed across the ballroom as a security guard fired a blind shot toward the dais. The bullet punched a splintered hole through the mahogany podium inches from Julian’s chest. He dropped instantly, hitting the polished marble floor and rolling behind the heavy wooden barrier of the stage.
Heavy, hurried footsteps pounded across the marble floor as security personnel rushed the dais, their tactical flashlights cutting erratic, blinding beams through the gloom.
"Clear the stage! Find them!" a gruff voice shouted over the rising din of the crowd fleeing toward the exits.
Julian kept low, crawling silently toward the edge of the stage. His hands brushed against something cold and metallic on the floor—Arthur Sterling’s dropped revolver. He scooped it up instinctively, the weight of the firearm feeling alien and heavy in his palm.
A pair of polished black dress shoes stepped up onto the dais just feet away from where he crouched. A tactical flashlight beam swept across the floor, stopping just inches from Julian’s shoes.
Before the guard could raise his weapon or shout an alert, a silent shadow dropped from the structural scaffolding directly above the stage. It was Clara. She landed with cat-like grace squarely on the guard’s back, driving her elbow down hard against the base of his neck. The man collapsed instantly, unconscious before he even hit the marble.
"The upload is at ninety-six percent," Clara whispered urgently, pulling Julian back up to his feet. "We have less than thirty seconds before the terminal locks down automatically."
Julian vaulted back onto the dais, keeping his eyes locked on the digital screen. 98%... 99%... COMPLETE.
A chime echoed softly through the annex sound system, followed by an automated robotic voice announcing across every floor of the building: Global ledger broadcast successfully initiated. All files mirrored to public decentralized networks.
Arthur Sterling appeared at the base of the dais, his face bloodied, his suit jacket torn. He looked up at the giant screen displaying the irrefutable evidence of his crimes with a look of absolute, soul-crushing defeat. He raised a small, encrypted override detonator in his trembling hand.
"You stupid children," Arthur whispered, a mad glint in his eye as his thumb hovered over the red trigger. "If I go down, the entire financial district goes up with me."
Before Arthur could depress the trigger, a blinding flash of light cut through the emergency backup strobes in the ballroom. The massive glass ceiling above the atrium shattered outward with a thunderous roar, showering the room in a cascade of glittering glass shards.
Through the opening dropped a heavily armed federal tactical team, their ropes sliding down rapidly as dozens of red laser sights painted Arthur Sterling’s chest in a web of inescapable doom.
"Federal Marshals! Drop the detonator!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
Arthur slowly lowered his hand, staring up at the roof as the tactical agents swarmed the dais, pinning him to the marble floor in a swift, practiced motion.

Julian let out a long, ragged breath, letting the heavy revolver slip from his fingers onto the stage. He turned to look at Clara, expecting to see triumph in her eyes. Instead, her face was deathly pale as she stared down at
