Chapter 3 - The Cold Barrel

The metallic clack-clack of the shotgun mechanism echoed like a thunderclap inside the cavernous, damp warehouse. Julian froze instantly, the beam of his phone flashlight wavering wildly against the wet concrete floor. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to run, but his feet felt welded to the ground.

"Drop the phone, Julian," a raspy, unfamiliar voice commanded from the deep shadows near a stack of rotting wooden pallets.

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He slowly let go of his phone, watching it clatter against the concrete, the LED light still illuminating the terrified face of Clara tied to the chair a few yards away. She was struggling against thick plastic zip-ties, her breath coming in ragged, audible gasps.

"Who are you?" Julian asked, keeping his hands raised in plain view, his tuxedo jacket shifting slightly to reveal the black fabric of his shirt. "What do you want with us?"

A tall man stepped out from the darkness, wearing a heavy trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat that cast his eyes in total shadow. In his hands, he held a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, the barrel pointed directly at Julian’s chest. The man walked with a distinct limp, dragging his left boot slightly with every step.

"You know exactly what I want," the man said softly, stopping just ten feet away. "The accounts. All three offshore accounts. You and your lovely wife thought you could embezzle twenty million dollars from the firm and simply buy your way out with a pretty dinner and a plastic card."

Julian glanced sideways at Clara. Her eyes met his, filled not with the cold calculation she had worn at the restaurant table, but with a desperate plea. She hadn't betrayed him; she had been captured hours ago. The woman at the restaurant table—the one who had smiled and handed the card to the waiter—had been an imposter. A professional decoy.

"She didn't know anything," Julian lied smoothly, trying to buy time, calculating the distance between himself and the man with the shotgun. "Let her go. Take me instead."

The man in the trench coat let out a harsh, dry chuckle that held no humor. "Save the heroics for a courtroom, Julian. Oh wait, you won't live to see one."

The man raised the barrel slightly, shifting his weight. Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged violently to the left, diving behind a heavy wooden crate just as a deafening blast tore through the space he had occupied a fraction of a second before. Splinters exploded from the wood, raining down on his hair and shoulders.

Before the man could pump the shotgun for a second shot, Julian scrambled forward, grabbing a heavy iron wrench off a nearby workbench. He swung it blindly around the edge of the crate, connecting with a solid thud against the attacker's shin.

The man cried out in pain, dropping the shotgun as he stumbled backward. Julian leaped to his feet, closing the distance instantly, and drove his fist straight into the man's jaw. The attacker collapsed heavily onto the concrete, unconscious.

Julian stood panting, his chest heaving, listening to the heavy silence return to the warehouse. He rushed over to Clara, pulling a pocket knife from his trousers to slice through the thick plastic ties binding her wrists and ankles.

As the final tie snapped, Clara slumped forward into his arms, trembling violently. He pulled her close, pressing a kiss to her damp hair, feeling the safety of having her back in his arms.

"We need to get out of here right now," Julian whispered urgently, helping her to her feet.

Clara pulled back, her face deathly pale in the dim light of the fallen phone screen. She reached up and touched his cheek with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking.

"Julian... look behind you," she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

Julian slowly turned around. The unconscious man on the floor was gone. In his place sat a burning mobile phone, its screen flashing a live video feed of their own living room, where a stranger was currently pouring gasoline over the couch.
