Chapter 4 - Smoke and Mirrors

The digital flames licking across the living room sofa on the burning phone screen cast an eerie, flickering orange light across the warehouse floor. Julian stared at the screen in horror, recognizing every detail of his Manhattan penthouse: the imported Persian rug, the custom bookshelves, the framed photographs of a life they had painstakingly built together. It was all about to go up in smoke.
"We have to go, now," Julian said, grabbing Clara’s hand and pulling her toward the exit.
They burst through the rusted side door of the warehouse, gulping in the cold night air as they sprinted toward his sedan. The city skyline across the river glittered with indifferent beauty, a stark contrast to the absolute chaos consuming their lives. Julian threw open the passenger door for Clara, pushing her inside before sliding into the driver’s seat. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, burning rubber as they bolted away from the docks and headed uptown toward their apartment.
The drive was a blur of flashing traffic lights and frantic, breathless silence. Clara stared out the window, hugging her torn blazer tightly around her shoulders, her eyes hollow. The decoy at the restaurant, the golden card, the kidnapping, and now the fire—it was a multi-layered trap designed by someone who knew every single move they would make before they even thought of it.
"Who had access to the apartment keys?" Julian asked, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel so hard his hands ached.
"Only us," Clara replied, her voice trembling. "And Marcus."
Marcus. The name dropped like a lead weight inside the car. Marcus Sterling, Julian’s senior partner at the firm and the man who had supposedly been on a business trip in Zurich for the past three weeks. If Marcus was behind this, then the embezzlement scandal wasn't just a corporate dispute; it was a coup.
Julian pulled the sedan up to the curb outside their luxury high-rise apartment building. Smoke was already billowing from the third-floor windows, dark and thick against the night sky. Fire trucks were parked haphazardly outside, their red and blue emergency lights casting frantic geometric patterns across the brick facade.
Julian killed the engine, but before he could unbuckle his seatbelt, the passenger side door was jerked open.
A uniformed police officer hauled Clara out of the car before she could protest, slapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto her wrists with practiced efficiency.
"Clara Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, arson, and the attempted murder of Julian Vance," the officer barked over the wailing sirens.
Julian scrambled out of the driver's side, running around the front of the car. "Wait, there's been a mistake! She's the victim here!"
The officer pushed Clara against the side of the police cruiser, ignoring Julian completely. Clara didn't scream or fight back. She simply turned her head, looking directly at Julian with a terrifying, devastating calm.
"It’s time to show them the card, Julian," she whispered softly as they pushed her into the back of the squad car.
Before Julian could process her words, a heavy hand gripped his shoulder from behind, spinning him around. It was Marcus Sterling, dressed in a dry, immaculate grey suit, holding an open umbrella despite the rain having stopped entirely.
"Good evening, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, flashing a cold, predatory smile. "Thanks for bringing the evidence right to us."
Julian reached instinctively for his coat pocket, feeling the heavy metallic edge of the golden credit card. Marcus's smile widened as he pulled a small federal badge from his coat.

"FBI, Julian," Marcus whispered. "You're under arrest for treason."
