Chapter 10 - The Executive Floor

The private maintenance elevator rose with a sickening, grinding shudder, the bare overhead bulb flickering rhythmically against the peeling grey walls of the shaft. Julian leaned back against the metal railing, breathing heavily, trying to process the sheer scale of the conspiracy. The firm, the board, the fake deaths, the federal oversight—it was all a massive, institutionalized heist disguised as corporate governance.

Beside him, Clara stood with absolute composure, using a small tactical knife to clean a speck of dirt from the barrel of her suppressed pistol. The calm detachment she wore wasn't coldness; it was armor.

"If Marcus was right, the entire board is up there celebrating," Julian said quietly, breaking the hum of the elevator motor. "How do we take down a room full of untouchable billionaires with just a flash drive and a pistol?"

Clara looked up, her dark eyes catching the harsh flickering light. "We don't shoot them, Julian. We expose them. Every transaction, every offshore shell company, every corrupted federal official—it broadcasts live the moment we plug that drive into the main annex terminal."

With a soft, metallic ding, the elevator car ground to a halt. The heavy steel doors slid open automatically, revealing a stark contrast to the subterranean gloom they had just left behind.

They stepped out onto the executive floor of the Federal Reserve annex. It was a sprawling, ultra-modern ballroom bathed in soft, amber lighting. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, and classical string quartet music drifted softly through the air. Wealthy men in immaculate tuxedos and women in glittering evening gowns mingled near open bars, laughing and clinking champagne flutes, completely unaware of the storm standing at their threshold.

Julian instinctively straightened his ruined, soot-stained tuxedo, stepping out of the elevator alcove. Clara followed closely behind him, her black blazer dress looking entirely at home among the high-society attire, though her hand remained firmly tucked inside her quilted handbag, resting on the grip of her weapon.

As they walked past a cluster of laughing executives, Julian recognized faces from the front pages of the Wall Street Journal. Senators, central bankers, and senior partners of his own firm—all of them drinking champagne purchased with stolen pensions.

None of them noticed Julian and Clara at first. They looked like just another wealthy couple arriving fashionably late to the gala.

They made their way silently toward the massive mahogany dais at the far end of the ballroom, where the master presentation terminal stood beneath a giant digital screen currently displaying the company's surging stock graph.

Julian stepped up to the podium, his heart hammering against his ribs. He pulled the encrypted flash drive from his pocket, his hand steadying as he aligned it with the USB port on the side of the terminal.

Before he could push it in, a heavy hand firmly grasped his shoulder from behind.

Julian turned around slowly. Standing there with a warm, grandfatherly smile was Arthur Sterling—Marcus’s estranged father and the chairman of the board.

"Good evening, Julian," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying the smooth, oily charm of a man who owned the world. "I was wondering when you and your lovely wife would finally crash the party."

Arthur reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small, silenced revolver, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Julian’s ribs.

"Now, be a good boy," Arthur whispered, his smile never reaching his eyes. "Take your hand off the drive, or I paint this podium with your brains."
