Chapter 9 - The Biometric Lock

The red warning light pulsed rhythmically against the concrete walls of the basement corridor, casting an eerie crimson glow over the group.
Julian stared at the digital keypad in frustration. He clenched his fists, feeling the terrible weight of Elena’s calculated traps boxing them in at every turn.
"There has to be a manual override," Julian said, running his hand along the heavy steel frame of the vault door in search of a hidden keyhole or service panel.
Arthur stepped forward, brushing past the police officer with practiced authority. He pulled a small, pen-sized ultraviolet flashlight from his trench coat pocket and clicked it on, sweeping the beam across the surrounding wall panels.
"She wouldn't rely solely on the digital sensor," Arthur muttered, his eyes narrowing as the UV light illuminated a faint smudge of grease near the hinge. "Smart-home systems of this tier always require a physical backup cylinder in case of a complete grid failure."
Arthur pressed firmly against a seemingly solid concrete brick beside the keypad. With a soft pneumatic hiss, the brick swung inward on a hidden hinge, revealing a small, recessed keyhole covered by a protective rubber cap.
Elena’s triumphant smile vanished instantly. Her eyes widened in sudden panic as she strained against the officer holding her arms.
"Don't touch that! You don't know what’s wired into the trigger mechanism!" Elena screamed, her voice losing its polished composure entirely.
Arthur ignored her entirely. He reached into his coat pocket once more and pulled out a small set of professional lock-picking tools. With steady, experienced fingers, he inserted a tension wrench into the tiny cylinder.
"Stand back, everyone," Arthur instructed quietly.
Julian pulled the two police officers back a few paces, his eyes fixed on the master locksmith at work.
With a subtle click that echoed sharply in the confined space, the internal tumblers fell into place. Arthur gave the wrench a sharp twist.
A deep, pneumatic groan resonated from deep within the steel door as the massive internal bolts retracted one by one. The heavy door slowly swung open on its own, releasing a gust of cool, dry air from the vault within.
Julian stepped forward to peer inside the dimly lit chamber. Rows of metal filing cabinets lined the walls, and a large mahogany desk sat in the center under a single overhead fixture. But it wasn't the ledgers that caught Julian’s eye.
Resting on the center of the desk was a small, glowing laptop connected directly to a heavy-duty shredder unit by a thick cable. The screen displayed a progress bar labeled: Emergency Data Purge: 87% Complete.
Arthur swore under his breath and lunged into the room, diving toward the power strip on the floor.
Before Arthur’s hand could reach the plug, the shredder’s internal motor whirred to life with a violent screech, chewing through the final stack of physical master documents at blinding speed.
Elena laughed hysterically from the hallway. "You're too late! The ledgers are gone!"

Suddenly, the computer screen flickered, and a different window popped up, displaying a live video feed from a secondary off-site server that Julian recognized instantly.
