Chapter 8 - The Basement Vault

The police officer’s hand paused on his radio mic. He exchanged a sharp, assessing look with his partner before turning his attention back to Elena.
"What’s in the basement safe, Mrs. Vance?" the officer asked, his tone dropping into official caution.
Elena tilted her chin up, a defiant gleam in her eyes. "Evidence that implicates every single board member of the foundation Julian works for. If I go down, I am taking half the city’s philanthropic elite with me."
Julian stepped forward, pushing past the threshold of the bedroom. "Don't listen to her, Officer. She’s bluffing. She creates chaos to distract from her own crimes."
Arthur shook his head slowly, stepping closer to the officers. "She’s not entirely bluffing, Officer. Elena has spent five years gathering leverage on everyone in her social circle. The basement safe has physical ledger books and financial wire transfers."
Julian stared at Arthur in disbelief. "You knew about the safe too?"
"I installed it," Arthur admitted without a trace of shame. "Back when I still believed I was working for respectable people."
Inside the bedroom, Maya’s small voice drifted out into the hallway. "Daddy? Are the police going to take us away too?"
Julian’s heart broke a little more at the sound. He turned back into the doorway, kneeling beside the bed to look his daughter in the eyes.
"No, sweetheart. The police are here to help us. We're going to leave this place very soon, and nobody is ever going to hurt your leg again," Julian promised, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
Maya nodded sleepily, the emotional exhaustion of the evening finally catching up to her. "Can we take my pink dress?"
"We can take anything you want," Julian whispered, kissing her forehead.
He stood back up and walked out to the landing, where the officers were holding Elena by the wrists, securing her with zip-ties.
"Officer, I want to open that basement safe myself," Julian said firmly. "I have the secondary combination."
The lead officer nodded. "Lead the way, Mr. Vance. But keep your hands where we can see them."
They descended the grand staircase in a tense procession, the red and blue emergency lights casting dancing shadows across the white tiered cake sitting untouched in the dining room.
Julian led them down the narrow back stairs toward the reinforced steel door of the basement vault. He punched in a six-digit code on the digital pad, but instead of the expected mechanical unlock, a harsh red warning light flashed rapidly.
"Access denied," an automated voice chimed from the keypad. "Biometric override required."
Elena, flanked by the second officer a few steps behind, let out a raspy, triumphant chuckle.

"Only my fingerprint can open that door now," Elena sneered. "And I revoked all secondary permissions ten minutes ago."
