Chapter 2 - The Locked Fortress

The heavy steel deadbolts slid into place with a mechanical finality that echoed through the grand foyer like a gunshot.
Julian pressed Maya closer to his chest, feeling the frantic, hummingbird flutter of the little girl’s heart against his ribs. The white medical leg brace felt impossibly heavy and cold, a rigid piece of engineering designed to correct a bone structure that Elena viewed as an embarrassing flaw in her perfect public image.
Elena stood by the main entrance, her fingers still resting casually on the wall-mounted keypad that controlled the smart-home security lockdown. The red indicator light blinked rhythmically, a tiny, baleful eye watching their every move.
"You think a locked door keeps you safe from reality, Julian?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into a smooth, conversational register that was far more unsettling than her previous shouting. She smoothed the golden fabric over her hips, stepping forward with the calculated grace of a predator closing in on wounded prey.
Julian stood up slowly, keeping Maya behind his leg. He shielded the child’s tear-streaked face from view, his eyes locked onto his wife’s unrepentant expression.
"Open the doors, Elena. This is over. I am taking Maya and I am walking out of this house tonight," Julian said, keeping his voice low, steady, and dangerously calm.
Elena let out a short, dry laugh that lacked any true amusement. She reached out and tapped the glass tier of the pristine wedding-style cake nearby, breaking off a piece of white fondant with her manicured fingernail.
"Walk out? To where, Julian? Your little bank account has been frozen since Tuesday. The car keys are in my purse. And legally, this estate is under my corporate umbrella," Elena replied, popping the sweet morsel into her mouth as if discussing grocery prices.
Maya whimpered, clutching Julian’s brown trouser leg. "Daddy, my leg hurts. The strap is too tight now."
Julian dropped to his knees once more, ignoring Elena entirely. He gently ran his calloused fingers along the padding of the white medical leg brace, checking the Velcro and metal hinges. He knew the brace was essential; the orthopedic surgeon had warned them both that removing it prematurely could cause permanent developmental damage to Maya’s healing tibia. Yet Elena had stripped it off in a fit of rage simply because the child couldn't walk fast enough for a society photo-op.
"I've got you, sweetheart. Just breathe with me," Julian murmured, adjusting the latch until it clicked securely into place.
Elena stepped closer, her gold gown shimmering in the dimming emergency lights. She leaned down, whispering something so softly that only Julian could hear.
