Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

The mention of the toy chest sent a jolt of cold adrenaline straight through Julian’s veins. He froze, his hands lingering on the cold metal hinges of Maya’s leg brace.

Elena smiled, reading the sudden panic in his eyes like an open book. She turned on her heel, her heavy puff shoulders swaying with calculated arrogance as she walked toward the sweeping staircase.

"Think about it while you pack your imaginary bags," Elena called back over her shoulder, her footsteps clicking sharply against the marble. "Midnight is when the automated medical compliance report goes straight to my legal team."

Julian didn't answer. He scooped Maya up into his arms, ignoring the dull ache in his lower back. The child buried her face in his white shirt, her small frame trembling.

"Daddy, are we going to run away?" Maya whispered into his collarbone.

"We're going to get your things first, sweet girl," Julian replied, his voice strained as he carried her up the stairs, purposefully avoiding the guest wing where Elena had retreated.

They reached Maya’s bedroom, a pastel-colored sanctuary that felt suffocatingly quiet. In the corner sat the oversized white wooden toy chest, carved with delicate daisies and painted with non-toxic lacquer. Julian set Maya gently on her pink quilted bed, making sure her braced leg was propped up on a plush pillow.

"Stay right here, Maya. Daddy needs to look for your favorite music box," Julian instructed, offering a reassuring smile that felt hollow even to him.

He walked over to the toy chest, lifting the heavy hinged lid. Inside rested a colorful assortment of stuffed animals, wooden blocks, and picture books. He pushed past a pile of plush rabbits and felt around the false wooden bottom that Elena had cleverly installed during the home remodeling project two years ago.

His fingers brushed against a cold, metallic latch. With a quiet click, the false floor sprang open.

Julian held his breath as he reached inside. His hand closed around a heavy, leather-bound portfolio and a small, secure flash drive. He pulled them out into the dim light of the bedside lamp.

The portfolio bore the logo of a private medical clinic in Zurich. As Julian flipped open the heavy cover, the first page revealed a series of confidential pediatric orthopedic scans—scans that proved Maya’s bone condition was not genetic, as Elena had always claimed to the press, but the result of an unexplained trauma from three years ago.

A sharp noise at the bedroom door made Julian snap the folder shut.

Elena stood leaning against the doorframe, her golden gown catching the light. She wasn't holding a remote this time; she was holding a heavy glass vase filled with withered lilies.

"Looking for your past, Julian?" Elena asked, her eyes dark and unreadable.
