Chapter 11 - The Pulsing Red Light

Julian froze, his hand hovering over the edge of the pink quilted blanket.

The rhythmic, pulsing red light cast a tiny, baleful reflection against the satin underside of the pillow. It was a frequency he hadn't seen in the house before—too sophisticated for a standard baby monitor, and far too localized to be part of the smart-home automation system that the police had supposedly neutralized.

He carefully slid his fingers beneath the pillow, his breath catching in his throat.

Resting against the soft fabric was a sleek, military-grade tracking beacon no larger than a matchbox, its LED blinking methodically as it transmitted a continuous telemetry signal to an unknown receiver.

Maya stirred slightly, shifting her weight onto her side and inadvertently pressing her braced leg against the mattress. "Daddy... what's that blinking thing?" she murmured, her voice thick with sleep.

"Nothing, sweetheart. Just a little electronic toy that got left behind," Julian lied smoothly, though his heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

He plucked the beacon from beneath the pillow and closed his fist tightly around it, cutting off the tiny red glow. Elena was gone, safely locked in the back of a police cruiser speeding toward the downtown precinct. Arthur had vanished into the night. So who had planted this tracker under Maya’s pillow, and how long had it been transmitting their exact coordinates?

Julian stood up slowly, making sure not to wake the child again. He walked over to the bedroom window, pulled back the lace curtain by a fraction of an inch, and peered out into the sprawling front courtyard.

The red and blue flashlights of the police cruisers were gone, having departed a few minutes earlier. But parked near the edge of the private driveway, sitting half-concealed beneath the shadow of a large weeping willow, was an unmarked black sedan with its headlights completely turned off.

A cold sweat broke out across Julian’s neck. The beacon in his hand was active, meaning whoever was sitting in that dark sedan wasn't just monitoring the house—they were waiting for the police to leave so they could make their move.

He slipped the tracker into his trouser pocket and walked swiftly toward the bedroom door, keeping his steps light on the hardwood floor. He needed to lock the second-floor windows, check the perimeter doors, and get Maya into the interior hallway away from any glass.

As he stepped out into the dimly lit hallway, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket with an incoming text message from an unknown, unformatted number.

Julian pulled the phone out and stared at the screen in horror.

The message consisted of a single image and a short line of text.

The image was a live, high-resolution photograph taken from outside Maya’s bedroom window, showing Julian standing beside the bed just thirty seconds prior.

The text beneath it read: You secured the house for the police, Julian. But you forgot to lock the back gate. We are coming inside.
