Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The stranger’s words hung in the stale air of the hallway like a sentence delivered by a judge.

Elena staggered back half a step, her manicured hand flying to her throat as she stared at the hooded figure on the landing. The golden fabric of her gown rustled sharply against the wallpaper.

"Who let you in? The biometric locks cannot be bypassed without the master passcode," Elena stammered, her composure shattering completely under the weight of an invisible threat she had clearly not anticipated.

The stranger slowly lowered the hood, revealing a face lined with deep wrinkles, silver-streaked hair, and eyes that held the hard, unyielding glint of someone who had spent decades burying uncomfortable truths. It was Arthur, the retired head of security for the Zurich pediatric clinic where Maya’s medical records had been altered three years ago.

Julian stared at the older man in stunned silence. The pieces of a terrifying puzzle were finally snapping together in his mind, forming a picture far darker than he had ever imagined.

"Arthur?" Julian breathed, lowering his hand from Maya’s shoulder for a brief second. "What are you doing here?"

Arthur took two measured steps forward, his heavy boots making a dull, heavy thud on the hardwood floor. He ignored Julian entirely, keeping his gaze locked on Elena like a hunter watching a cornered animal.

"I didn't come here to chat, Elena," Arthur said, his voice remarkably steady despite the tension in the room. "I came because your corporate checks stopped clearing last week, and my conscience finally decided it was worth more than your hush money."

Maya shifted uneasily on the bed, the metal hinge of her white medical leg brace clinking softly against the wooden bed frame. "Daddy, who is that man? Why is he scaring Mommy?"

Julian quickly stepped further into the doorway, shielding Maya’s line of sight. "It’s okay, sweetheart. Just stay on the bed. Everything is under control."

It was a lie, and they all knew it.

Elena recovered her footing with terrifying speed, the panic in her eyes vanishing behind a mask of cold, calculated defiance. She tossed her high bun back and squared her puff shoulders, stepping up to Arthur with reckless bravado.

"You have no proof, old man. Anything you brought with you is inadmissible hearsay without the physical drive," Elena said, her voice dripping with ice.

Arthur gave a grim, humorless smile. He reached into his trench coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, industrial-grade data decryptor, its small LCD screen glowing with a bright blue light.

"I don't need the drive in your pocket, Elena. The clinic's cloud server automatically mirrors every diagnostic file the second it's accessed," Arthur replied, holding up the device. "And the local police received the complete data dump twenty minutes ago."

Before Elena could lunge for the decryptor, the distant wail of police sirens pierced the quiet night air, growing louder by the second.
