Chapter 5 - The Darkness in the Hall

The sudden blackout swallowed the room in absolute shadow, broken only by the pale moonlight filtering through the sheer lace curtains.
Maya let out a sharp gasp of fear, her small hands grabbing blindly at the bedsheets.
"Daddy! I can't see! Where are you?" the little girl cried out, the panic in her voice fracturing Julian’s focus entirely.
Julian abandoned his pursuit of Elena in that fraction of a second, his paternal instinct instantly overriding every other thought. He plunged through the dark toward the bed, colliding gently with the mattress frame before dropping to his knees beside Maya.
"I'm right here, sweetheart. I've got you. Hold onto my hand," Julian said, his voice a steady anchor in the terrifying gloom. He gripped her small, warm fingers, feeling her pulse racing against his palm.
Across the room, the faint rustle of sequins and the sharp click of high heels indicated Elena’s movement toward the hallway door.
"Elena, don't you dare leave us locked in here in the dark," Julian called out, standing up carefully while keeping one hand anchored to the bedpost.
A sharp click echoed from the doorway, followed by the soft whir of the smart-home auxiliary generator kicking in. Overhead, a single low-voltage emergency bulb flickered on, casting long, eerie shadows across the walls and ceiling.
Elena stood framed in the doorway. The flash drive was nowhere in sight—she must have slipped it into the secret pocket of her gold gown. But her face was deathly pale, and her eyes were fixed not on Julian, but on the hallway behind her.
"Who’s down there?" Elena whispered, her voice losing its previous steel and replaced by genuine, unadulterated shock.
Julian frowned, stepping cautiously between the bed and the door, keeping Maya safely behind him. He peered past Elena into the dimly lit corridor.
Standing at the top of the grand staircase, illuminated by the amber emergency glow, was a tall figure in a heavy rain-soaked trench coat. The stranger’s face was obscured by the deep hood, but in their gloved hand, they held something unmistakable: the master override key to the estate's security system.

"The lockdown is bypassed," the stranger said in a deep, gravelly voice that carried an unmistakable note of finality. "Open the front gates, Elena. They know what happened in Zurich."
