Chapter 9: The Custody Trial**

The county family court was packed to capacity. Reporters and corporate observers filled every wooden bench. Victoria sat at the plaintiff's table, radiant in an ice-blue tailored suit, flanked by three prominent family law attorneys.
Julian, Clara, and Arthur sat opposite them. In the center of the room sat Judge Evelyn Hall, a formidable jurist known for her zero-tolerance policy toward wealth-driven litigation.
"The plaintiff argues," Victoria’s lead attorney began, "that the minor child, Ewan Vance-Sterling, was kept in substandard, unregulated medical environments by a nurse who had an undisclosed conflict of interest, creating an unsafe psychological environment."
Judge Hall adjusted her spectacles, looking down at Clara. "Ms. Miller, how do you respond to the allegation that you isolated the child for personal financial gain?"
Clara stood up. Her hands did not shake this time. Her voice was steady, resonating through the silent courtroom.
"Your Honor, for five years, Ewan suffered from an autoimmune deficiency inherited during his mother's illness. I did not isolate him for money; I isolated him because his immune system could not survive public exposure without specialized treatments that Mr. Julian Sterling funded entirely out of his own pocket. Every dollar spent went directly to pediatric specialists and air filtration equipment."
Clara presented the certified medical records, signed by three independent chief medical officers.
Victoria’s attorney stood up quickly. "These are unverified private logs—"
"These logs are verified by the State Medical Board as of seven this morning," Julian announced, standing beside Clara. "Furthermore, Your Honor, we have submitted digital evidence showing the plaintiff bribed hospital administrators to forge the neglect complaints."
