Chapter 2: Shadows in Room 402**

The rain outside Mercy General Hospital hammered against the windowpane of pediatric room 402. Clara hurried down the dimly lit hallway, her nurse’s badge clicking against her chest. Julian followed two paces behind, a dark wool coat thrown over his rumpled shirt, his jaw set like carved granite.
Inside, small glowing stars illuminated the ceiling. A five-year-old boy with messy dark curls slept curled beneath a fleece blanket, clutching a worn wooden toy train. Beside the bed sat Julian’s trusted guardian, Marcus, an older man whose weary eyes softened upon seeing them enter.
"He spiked a low fever around midnight," Marcus whispered, rising quietly. "Nothing critical, but Victoria’s drivers were circling the block twenty minutes ago."
Julian approached the bed, his stern demeanor melting into profound gentleness. He knelt beside the mattress, smoothing a lock of hair from his son’s forehead. For five years, to shield Ewan from the ruthless corporate warfare of the Sterling dynasty, Julian had funded Clara’s specialized clinic while visiting only under cover of darkness. He had believed distance was protection. Now he saw it had been cowardice.
"He looks just like his mother," Clara said softly, adjusting the IV drip monitor. "Elena always said he inherited your stubborn chin."
"I failed her," Julian murmured, his thumb resting against Ewan’s small hand. "I let my father convince me that keeping him hidden in hospital suites was safer than bringing him home. Victoria didn't just find him by accident. Someone on the board sold his medical files."
"Then we move him," Clara urged, glancing toward the drawn blinds. "I have a clinic contact in upstate New York. A quiet sanctuary where nobody knows the Sterling name."

Julian shook his head, rising to his full height. "No more running, Clara. A boy cannot grow up in hiding. Tomorrow, I introduce my son to the world."
