THE GLASS HEIR / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Broken Skyline**

The air in the glass atrium hung cold and brittle, thick with the scent of spilled wine and ozone. Julian knelt on the jagged glass tiles, his thumbs carefully brushing away the streak of crimson dripping down Clara’s temple. Her trembling hands gripped his forearms, her knuckles white against his rolled-up sleeves.

"She knows about Ewan," Clara repeated, barely breathing the words.

Julian’s pulse struck like a hammer against his ribs. Across the atrium, Victoria stood poised under the cold chandelier light, the slit of her burgundy silk gown fluttering as the wind battered the floor-to-ceiling glass. Her emerald eyes narrowed, stripping away the polished veneer of high-society grace to reveal raw calculation.

"You really thought you could hide a five-year-old child from me in this city, Julian?" Victoria murmured, running a manicured finger over her diamond necklace. "The Sterling legacy belongs to us. Not to a ghost of your past, and certainly not to a street-level nurse’s little secret."

Julian stood up slowly. His silhouette blocked Clara from Victoria’s gaze, broad shoulders tense beneath his unbuttoned white shirt. "Ewan is not a secret, Victoria. He is my son. And this arrangement between our families ends tonight."

Victoria chuckled—a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the high glass vault. "Your father’s empire runs on my family’s banking licenses. Walk away from this engagement, Julian, and by sunrise, child protective services and the press will tear that little boy's sanctuary apart."

Clara pushed herself to her feet, clutching a velvet-bound folder she had salvaged from the broken desk in the study. Her voice shook, but her gaze never wavered. "You don't care about the boy. You only care about the trust fund his mother left behind before she died."

Victoria’s smirk vanished into a razor-thin line. "Check the cameras, Julian. Security is already downstairs."

Julian stepped closer to Victoria, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Then tell them to turn the cars around. Because if a single photograph of my boy leaks, your family's empire burns with mine."
