Chapter 7 - The Forged Memory

"What is this?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl as he stared at the digital recorder clutched in his hand. The blinking red light felt like an accusation. "I never said those words. I never plotted against Evelyn."
Helena stopped three feet away, the heavy silver candlestick held steadily in her right hand. The diamond necklace around her neck caught the faint sliver of light piercing through a gap in the heavy drapes. "Of course you didn't, Julian. Not consciously, at least. But after your father died and left the estate split between you and that ambitious girl, someone had to ensure the family assets remained consolidated. You were weak with sentimentality. I simply... arranged your environment to align with your long-term interests."
"You framed me," Julian said, the horrifying realization washing over him like ice water. "You used audio splicing, you drugged my drinks, you built a dossier of manufactured guilt so that if I ever suspected the truth, I would assume I was the monster."
"I protected you," Helena corrected smoothly, her tone disturbingly maternal. "Just as I am protecting you now. That woman downstairs is a liability. She escaped her enclosure, but she cannot leave this house. Put the recorder down, Julian. Go downstairs, pack a bag for Leo, and let me handle the final arrangements."
Julian stared at his mother. The woman who had raised him, comforted him, and built an empire of respectability was a stranger—a calculated architect of ruin who had imprisoned an innocent woman beneath the floorboards and turned her son into an unwitting accomplice.
"I'm calling the police," Julian said, reaching into his trouser pocket for his phone.
Before his fingers could wrap around the device, Helena lunged forward with surprising speed, swinging the heavy silver candlestick toward his temple. Julian ducked instinctively, but the metal grazed his shoulder, sending a sharp wave of pain radiating down his arm. He grabbed her wrist, twisting it until the candlestick clattered harmlessly against the floorboards.

Before he could secure her, a sharp, piercing scream echoed from the guest suite down the hall—Evelyn’s voice, crying out in absolute terror.
