Chapter 12 - Darkness in the Vault

Total darkness swallowed the subterranean chamber, broken only by the faint, pulsing red glow of a security battery backup in the corner. In the sudden silence, the sound of heavy breathing echoed off the damp stone walls.

"Stay where you are!" Helena’s voice rang out, sharp and paranoid, followed instantly by the deafening roar of a gunshot.

A bullet ricocheted off the stone ceiling, sending a shower of sparks cascading down into the darkness. Julian threw himself to the ground, rolling across the rough floor toward where he had last seen Evelyn’s chair. His hands swept through the empty space, brushing against thick hemp ropes that had been cut or severed.

"Evelyn!" Julian hissed, his fingers closing around a frail wrist in the dark.

"Over here," she whispered, her breath brushing against his ear. "She dropped the keys when the lights went out. The attorney is heading for the exit shaft."

Julian pulled Evelyn up, supporting her unsteady frame as they crept silently along the damp wall away from the center of the room. Another gunshot echoed through the cellar, the muzzle flash briefly illuminating Helena’s silhouette near the metal storage racks, shouting blindly into the void.

"Julian! You cannot escape this house!" Helena screamed, her voice cracking with fury and panic. "The perimeter doors are locked! The security system is armed!"

Julian guided Evelyn toward a secondary tunnel tucked behind a stack of wooden crates—a narrow passage the attorney had evidently used to enter the vault. They slipped into the darkness just as the backup generator kicked in, flooding the main chamber with harsh white fluorescent light.

Through a gap in the crates, Julian watched as Helena turned her gun toward the empty space where they had been standing moments before, her face twisted in a mask of absolute rage. Beside her, the attorney was frantically pressing buttons on a keypad near the iron door.

"The main breaker has been tripped from the master panel upstairs," the attorney panted, tapping his phone. "Someone is tampering with the house network."

Helena lowered the revolver slightly, her eyes narrowing as a cold realization hit her. "The maid."
