Chapter 2 - Fractured Alibis

A sharp cry of pain echoed through the grand living room, cut short as Evelyn bit her lip to keep from screaming. Julian dropped to his knees, shoving his mother back with a force that sent Helena stumbling against the mahogany side table. The crystal decanter rattled, its contents sloshing against the glass. Leo began to cry, small, high-pitched whimpers of fear vibrating in the tense air.

"Are you insane?" Julian roared, his face darkening with a fury Helena had never witnessed in all his thirty-five years. He quickly pried the heavy floor panel back up, his calloused hands sweeping away splintered wood to reveal Evelyn’s bleeding fingers.

"I am saving you from ruin," Helena hissed, massaging her bruised shoulder while maintaining a terrifying composure. Her eyes darted toward the maid, who stood frozen in the corner clutching the vacuum handle like a weapon. "Look at her, Julian. She is unstable. She lost her mind the day before the wedding and hid herself down there for attention, for pity, to destroy us. You know how fragile her mind was."

Evelyn coughed, a dry, racking sound that tasted of old dust and starvation. She gripped Julian’s wrist, leaving a smudge of dried dirt on his crisp white shirt. "He believes her," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "He always chose her stories over my reality."

Julian looked between the two women. The polished exterior of his life—the wealth, the social standing, the pristine mansion—was fracturing beneath his feet. He remembered the police report from five years ago, the search parties, the abandoned car by the cliffs, and Helena’s comforting embrace when he had wept for the woman who supposedly vanished into the sea. Every comforting memory now felt like a meticulously constructed lie.

"We need a doctor," Julian said, his voice flat and resolute.

"If you call a doctor, the police arrive within the hour," Helena warned, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "And when the police arrive, they will ask why my son never checked the sub-floor of his own master suite. They will ask why you inherited her estate three months after she disappeared."

Julian froze, the blood draining from his face as the legal implications slammed into him.
