Chapter 1 - The Veil Beneath the Floor

"Boss, this veil is coming out of the floor," the maid whispered, her hands trembling as she stopped the vacuum.
"This was Evelyn's," Julian said, his voice dropping into a breathless, icy register as he stared down at the delicate white lace caught in the mahogany seam.
"Evelyn ran away, you know that," Helena snapped, her diamond necklace flashing under the chandelier light as she stepped forward with a rigid posture.
"I never left this house," whispered the bruised woman trapped beneath the floorboards, her fingers gripping Julian’s wrists with desperate strength.
The heavy silence that followed was suffocating. Julian stood frozen, the silk veil clutched tightly in his fist, while five-year-old Leo hid behind his father’s trousers, peeking out with wide, uncomprehending eyes. Helena’s face drained of color, her aristocratic composure cracking under the weight of an exposed, five-year-old nightmare. The maid backed away slowly, terrified by the sudden violence of the secret unspooling before her.
Julian pulled harder on the hidden latch. The hinges groaned, resisting years of accumulated dust and polished wax, before finally giving way with a hollow pop. Beneath the floorboards lay a narrow, airless cavity just large enough for a person to curl into. Inside sat Evelyn, her torn wedding dress gray with grime, her dark hair tangled and matted with dried blood. Her eyes, wide and luminous with terror, locked onto Julian’s face. She was not a memory. She was a living ghost.
Helena’s breath hitched. She reached out, her manicured fingers clawing at Julian’s sleeve. "Shut it, Julian. Put the boards back down. Think of the family name, think of Leo. If the authorities find out about this, everything we built will vanish in a single afternoon."
Julian ignored his mother. His chest heaved as he stared down at the battered woman he had supposedly mourned for half a decade. "Evelyn," he breathed, his voice breaking. "How is this possible?"
Evelyn winced as the harsh living room light hit her bruised skin. She raised a frail, trembling hand to shield her eyes, her lips parting to reveal a horrifying truth. "She didn't lock me down here to protect the family, Julian. She locked me down here to protect her own inheritance."

Helena lunged forward, her face twisted in sudden panic, and slammed the heavy mahogany panel down onto Evelyn's fingers with a sickening crunch.
