Chapter 5 - The Maid's Confession

"Boss... don't go up there," the maid whispered, her voice trembling so violently the words barely carried across the grand foyer.
Julian stopped on the third step, his arms tightening around Evelyn’s fragile frame. He turned his head, his dark eyes narrowing as he looked down at the young woman cowering on the velvet bench. "What did you say?"
The maid glanced nervously at Helena, who stood stiffly at the foot of the stairs, her face carved from stone. "I... I didn't mean anything. Just that the guest rooms aren't clean."
"That is a lie," Evelyn murmured against Julian’s chest, her breath warm and shallow against his unbuttoned shirt. "She knows. She cleans the study every Tuesday. She’s seen what’s behind the false bookcase."
Helena took a step toward the stairs, her expression poisonous. "Shut your mouth, you pathetic parasite. Julian, put her down. If you walk past this landing, you are choosing a lunatic over your family, your son, and your entire heritage."
Julian ignored his mother’s warnings and continued walking up the wide staircase. The polished wooden steps creaked softly under his boots. Every step felt like a descent into an underworld he had willingly ignored for half a decade. He carried Evelyn down the familiar hallway of the east wing, past the portraits of his ancestors staring down with painted judgment, and pushed open the door to the master guest suite.
He laid her gently on the crisp white duvet, the contrast between her filthy, torn wedding dress and the immaculate sheets striking a jarring chord. Evelyn grabbed his wrist before he could pull away.
"The safe isn't the only thing behind that bookcase, Julian," she whispered, her eyes welling with tears. "Go check the wall in my old dressing room. The room you were told I never even entered before the wedding."
Julian straightened up, his heart pounding against his ribs. He turned and walked out of the bedroom, his jaw clenched.

As he approached the locked door of the east wing dressing room, he heard a distinct metallic click echoing from inside the dark, empty space.
