Chapter 4 - The Brass Key

The small brass key rested between them like a detonator. Helena took a sharp step forward, her high heels clicking aggressively against the hardwood, but Julian raised a single hand to block her path. His muscular frame shielded Evelyn, who was shivering violently on the floor, clutching the tattered remains of her veil around her shoulders like a shield.
"What is that?" Julian demanded, keeping his eyes fixed on his mother.
"It is nothing," Helena lied too quickly, her voice pitching up a fraction of an octave. "She’s delusional, Julian. Years in the dark have rotted her memory. She’s manufacturing objects to fit a narrative where she is the victim and we are the monsters."
Evelyn coughed weakly, leaning her head back against the edge of the sofa. "It’s not a delusion, Helena. It’s the key to the wall safe in your private study. The safe where you keep the modified deeds, the forged medical records, and the bank transfers routing my family’s fortune into your personal accounts."
Leo, still watching from the safety of the hallway corner, tugged on his bow tie. "Daddy, why is the lady so dirty? Why is Grandma yelling?"
Julian didn't answer his son. The weight of the past five years pressed down on his shoulders. He remembered the day Evelyn supposedly ran away—the hastily packed suitcase found by the front door, the note left on the kitchen counter written in handwriting that had always seemed slightly off. He had blamed himself for not being attentive enough, for working too late, for trusting his mother's comforting presence when his world collapsed.
"Get up," Julian said softly to Evelyn. She tried to stand, but her legs buckled beneath her. Without hesitation, he scooped her into his arms, ignoring the gasp of outrage from Helena.
"You are destroying us," Helena hissed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You carry her upstairs, and you invite an irreversible catastrophe into this home. We had peace, Julian. We had wealth, we had respect."
"We had a lie built on a grave," Julian replied coldly, turning toward the grand staircase.

As Julian carried Evelyn toward the second-floor landing, the maid looked up from the velvet bench, her eyes wide with terror as she whispered something that made Julian freeze on the third step.
