Chapter 11 - The Breach

The metal storage rack collapsed with a deafening crash, scattering decades of yellowed deeds and financial records across the damp stone floor. Julian pinned the stranger to the ground, his fist raised, ready to strike, but paused as the man gasped for air beneath his weight.

"Get off me, you fool!" the stranger choked out, clawing at Julian’s forearms. "I’m the family attorney! I’m the only thing standing between you and a federal penitentiary!"

Helena didn't flinch. She stood calmly beside Evelyn’s chair, reaching into her handbag with agonizing slowness to pull out a sleek, black revolver. The metallic click of the safety disengaging cut sharply through the hum of the overhead lights.

"Step away from him, Julian," Helena commanded, her voice terrifyingly steady as she aimed the barrel directly at her son’s chest. "You have always been prone to emotional outbursts. But gunshots in the basement of a historic home are difficult to explain away, even for a man of your standing."

Julian slowly rose from the floor, releasing the gasping attorney, who immediately scrambled backward into the shadows. Julian turned his eyes toward his mother, looking past the weapon directly into her cold, unyielding gaze.

"Where is my son?" Julian demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that echoed off the stone walls.

Helena adjusted her diamond necklace, the sparkling stones reflecting the harsh yellow light. "Leo is safe. For now. He is upstairs with the nanny, blissfully unaware that his entire inheritance—and his father’s freedom—hangs by a thread. But that depends entirely on whether you finish what you started five years ago."

Evelyn strained against the ropes binding her to the chair, her voice raspy and desperate. "Don't do it, Julian! If you sign those papers, you sign away your soul. She will kill us both the moment the ink dries. She killed your father the same way when he tried to rewrite his will!"

Julian froze. He looked from Evelyn to his mother, the fragmented pieces of his family history finally snapping into a coherent, horrifying picture. His father’s sudden death of an apparent heart attack five years ago. The rapid consolidation of wealth. The convenient disappearance of a bride on the eve of her wedding.

"It’s true, isn't it?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a grief so profound it overshadowed his anger. "You killed him."

Helena’s expression didn't change, but her hand holding the revolver tightened slightly. "He was weak, Julian. Just like you."

Before Helena could pull the trigger, the overhead lights flickered violently and plunged the entire basement into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
