Chapter 7 - The Manila Folder

Mark pulled the manila folder from the iron safe, the paper slightly yellowed at the edges as if it had been sealed away for decades. The overhead light in the master closet flickered once before stabilizing, casting a harsh, clinical glow over the documents inside.

"Dad, what is it?" Chloe asked, her voice trembling as she peered over his shoulder, her eyes catching sight of an official birth certificate that bore a date long before she believed she had entered the family.

Mark didn't answer immediately. He flipped open the cover page, his eyes darting across typewritten lines, legal seals, and signatures that bore Sarah’s unmistakable handwriting in the margins. His face turned ashen, the color draining entirely from his cheeks as he gripped the edge of the shelf for balance.

"This doesn't make any sense," Mark murmured, his voice cracking with confusion.

"Read it out loud, Dad. Please," Chloe begged, a cold knot forming in her stomach as she watched her father’s expression curdle into a mixture of horror and profound guilt.

Mark cleared his throat, his eyes scanning a paragraph near the center of the primary document.

"‘To whom it may concern,’" Mark read aloud, his voice shaking violently. "‘If this document is ever opened, it means Tiffany has bypassed my security measures. Chloe is not my biological daughter, nor is she legally adopted through the state agencies Mark believes handled her placement. She was brought to our door under circumstances involving a private agreement with a medical facility in Boston—a facility where Tiffany was once employed as a head nurse.’"

Chloe staggered backward, her back hitting the cedar-lined wall of the closet. The world seemed to tilt violently on its axis.

"That's a lie," Chloe whispered, her hands flying to her head as the red marks on her face began to throb in rhythm with her racing pulse. "Mom raised me! She loved me! We baked cookies in this kitchen, we planted the garden outside—she was my mother!"

"She was your mother, Chloe, legally and emotionally," Mark insisted, dropping the papers and stepping forward to grab her by the shoulders, his eyes fierce with conviction. "Paperwork doesn't change the life we shared. Sarah raised you from the time you were an infant. Nothing in this folder changes that."

"Then why did Tiffany want me out of the house so badly?" Chloe cried, tears spilling over her lashes again. "Why did she forge the will and try to throw me into the street tonight?"

"Because," a cold, calm voice echoed from the bedroom doorway, "she knew the rest of the file was still locked in the floorboards."

Mark and Chloe spun around in unison. Standing in the threshold of the master bedroom was Detective Miller—not Tiffany, but a local investigator who had apparently entered through the unlocked back kitchen door after the patrol cars pulled away. He held a second, thicker leather-bound ledger in his gloved hands, his expression grim and uncompromising.

"Mr. Miller, Miss Chloe," the detective said, stepping into the room and holding up the ledger. "We found this hidden in the crawlspace beneath the kitchen floorboards. It details the financial transactions between Tiffany and the Boston medical facility—dating back to the exact week your real mother disappeared."

Before either of them could process the detective's words, the overhead lights in the entire house flickered violently and died, plunging the master bedroom into total darkness.
