Chapter 6 - The Secret Compartment

The wooden box shattered upon impact, scattering its contents across the polished floorboards like broken glass. Sarah’s platinum wedding ring rolled lazily toward Chloe’s sneakers, catching the harsh strobe of the police lights outside. Next to it lay a stack of blank prescription pads bearing the official letterhead of Dr. Henderson, along with a small brass key that matched the antique lock of Sarah’s personal desk upstairs.
Tiffany stopped dead in her tracks, her wrist firmly gripped by the officer, her previous facade of wounded innocence completely dissolved into a sneering, bitter scowl.
"You think this proves something?" Tiffany spat out, her voice dripping with venom as she glared at Mark. "Sarah gave me those items for safekeeping before she lost her mind. She knew you wouldn't understand, Mark. You were too blind, too weak to handle her decline."
"Don't speak her name," Mark warned, his voice vibrating with a dangerous, controlled fury as he stepped past the officers and knelt down to pick up Sarah’s ring. He slid it onto his pinky finger, where it fit loosely, a stark reminder of the wife he had failed to protect.
The lead officer clicked his handcuffs into place around Tiffany’s wrists, the sharp metallic click echoing loudly through the silent foyer.
"Tiffany Miller, you are being detained for questioning regarding potential forgery and elder endangerment," the officer stated formally, guiding her toward the open front door.
"This isn't over!" Tiffany screamed over her shoulder as she was led down the porch steps, her eyes locking onto Chloe with a promise of absolute retaliation. "You think you won, little girl? Check the safe in the master bedroom! See what your precious mother left behind about you!"
The heavy front door slammed shut as the officers escorted Tiffany to the squad car, cutting off her shrill voice. The sudden silence inside the house felt suffocating.
Chloe stood frozen by the staircase, her breath hitched in her throat. "What did she mean? What’s in the master bedroom safe?"
Mark stood up slowly, clutching the prescription pads and the brass key in his hand. He looked at Chloe, his eyes filled with a fresh wave of dread that threatened to consume whatever was left of their shattered family.
"I didn't even know there was a safe in the master bedroom," Mark admitted, his voice hollow. "Sarah never mentioned it to me."
"She mentioned it to me once," Chloe whispered, her hands beginning to tremble as the pieces of a much darker puzzle began to snap together. "She said she kept a file in there with adoption papers and a second set of medical records—records from before we moved to this town."
Mark stared at the brass key in his palm, the metal feeling heavier than lead. Without another word, he turned and began walking up the staircase, his footsteps heavy and hesitant. Chloe followed closely behind him, leaving the open front door behind as they ascended into the dark shadows of the second floor.
They reached the master bedroom. The room smelled faintly of lavender and dust, preserved exactly as Sarah had left it. Mark walked straight to the back of the walk-in closet, where a loose cedar panel concealed a heavy iron wall safe built directly into the drywall.

Mark inserted the small brass key into the lock. It turned with a smooth, silent click, and the heavy iron door swung open, revealing a single manila folder labeled with Chloe’s full name.
