Chapter 11 - The Twin Deception

The woman standing in the doorway tilted her head, a cold, calculated smile playing across her lips. The resemblance to Sarah was undeniable, down to the slight tilt of her chin and the shape of her hazel eyes, but her posture was entirely foreign—rigid, predatory, and devoid of any warmth.
"You must be wondering why I look so familiar," the woman said, her voice carrying a smooth, polished cadence that grated against Mark’s frayed nerves. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Elena. Sarah’s twin sister. And the true owner of this property."
Mark stared at her, his mind struggling to process the impossible information. "Sarah never mentioned a twin sister. She told me her family passed away in an accident when she was a teenager."
"Sarah was prone to rewriting her history to suit her suburban fantasies," Elena replied smoothly, stepping further into the foyer and running a gloved hand along the polished banister. "She loved playing the sweet, fragile housewife, hiding away in this little town while I handled the... complicated logistics of our family's estate."
Chloe stepped up the stairs behind her father, her eyes blazing with fury as she stared at both Elena and Tiffany, who stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the hallway.
"You lied about everything," Chloe accused, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "You and Tiffany worked together to push Mom out—or worse."
Tiffany let out a sharp, dismissive laugh, flipping the manila folder in her hands. "We didn't push her out, sweetheart. Sarah chose to walk away when she realized Elena was coming back to claim what was legally ours from the very beginning."
"That's a lie," Mark interrupted, his voice dropping into a dark, threatening register as he stepped past the threshold onto the main floor. "The autopsy report, the medical bills, the sudden decline—you poisoned her, Elena. You and Tiffany swapped places during her treatments so no one would question the signature changes."
Elena’s smile didn't waver, but her eyes hardened into dangerous slits. "You always were entirely too observant for your own good, Mark. That’s why Sarah kept you isolated out here in the suburbs, away from our business dealings in Boston."
"Where is she?" Mark demanded, taking another step forward. "Where is my wife?"
Before Elena could answer, the front door swung wide open once more, pushed by a sudden, violent gust of wind that carried the wail of approaching sirens from the main road.
Detective Miller stepped back into the house, but he wasn't alone. Behind him stood two federal agents in dark tactical gear, their badges gleaming in the overhead light as they raised their hands toward Elena and Tiffany.
"Elena Vance, Tiffany Cole, you are both under federal arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement," the lead agent announced, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.
Elena didn't flinch. Instead, she slowly turned her head to look directly at Chloe, whispering a final sentence that froze everyone in the room.

"Ask her who really brought you to this house, Chloe," Elena whispered just before the cuffs clicked shut. "She isn't your mother at all."
