Chapter 14 - The Man in the Trench Coat

The man in the trench coat stepped into the pale beam of the detective's flashlight, his features sharp and weathered, bearing a scar that ran from the corner of his left eye down to his jawline. He didn't raise a weapon toward them, but the heavy iron crowbar in his hand rested casually against his leg with menacing intent.
"Who are you?" Mark demanded, stepping forward to shield Chloe with his body while keeping one hand protectively on her shoulder. "Drop the crowbar right now or the federal marshals will be down this hallway in thirty seconds."
The man let out a low, raspy chuckle that echoed off the tiled walls of the station. "Federal marshals? Mark, do you really think the people who orchestrated this cover-up don't have badges in their pockets too? Elena and Tiffany were just the low-level operatives. I’m the one who cleaned up the mess in Boston thirty years ago."
Detective Miller held his service weapon steady, his training kicking in as he assessed the threat. "Drop the weapon and identify yourself under federal statute. Last warning."
The man in the trench coat didn't flinch. Instead, he lifted his left hand slightly, holding up a golden key that looked identical to the one they had used to open Locker 42.
"Dr. Evelyn Vance didn't die in that fire, and neither did she simply abandon her child," the man said, his voice dropping into a somber, steady register that commanded attention. "She hid the primary research files in a secure vault downtown—vaults that only Chloe’s biometric signature can open."
Chloe stepped out from behind her father, her eyes fixed on the stranger with a mixture of fear and profound defiance. "Why should I believe a single word you’re saying? You’re working with Elena and Tiffany."
"If I were working with them, you’d already be dead," the man replied bluntly. "I was Evelyn’s head of security. For thirty years, I’ve kept her hidden while those monsters searched every suburb from here to the coast for the missing link. You are that link, Chloe. The research isn't just about illegal trials—it’s about a medical breakthrough that could clear your real mother's name and expose every corrupt official in this state."

Mark looked down at the black leather journal in his hands, then up at the stranger. The pieces of the puzzle were finally falling into place, creating a picture far larger and more dange
