Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal

Tiffany’s fingers curled desperately around the edge of the heavy paper, but Mark pulled it back with a sudden, protective jerk that sent her stumbling backward against the hallway table. A ceramic bowl rattled loudly, spilling a collection of stray keys and loose coins across the hardwood floor.

"Don't touch it," Mark commanded, his voice dropping into a tone so cold and unfamiliar that even Tiffany froze in her tracks.

Chloe watched her father closely, her heart hammering against her ribs. For the first time since her mother’s sudden illness and tragic passing, she saw a flicker of the man she used to know—the protective, observant father who wouldn't simply roll over and let Tiffany dictate the rules of their household.

"Mark, please," Tiffany pleaded, her voice adopting a theatrical, trembling sweetness that felt entirely manufactured. "Look at how she’s manipulating you. She printed that out on her laptop to turn us against each other. Don't you see what she's doing? She wants to destroy our marriage."

"She didn't print anything, Tiffany," Mark said slowly, holding the document up toward the entryway light. "This is printed on watermarked parchment. The same parchment Sarah’s attorney provided for our original mortgage documents. Where did you get the key to the home office, Tiffany?"

Tiffany’s jaw tightened, her lips pressing together into a thin white line. "Everyone has access to the home office. It’s not locked."

"Yes, it is," Chloe interrupted, stepping past her stepmother with renewed confidence. "Mom had the deadbolt changed the day after you moved in, Dad. Only she and I had the physical keys. So how did a document locked inside her private desk suddenly appear on the front porch right after you left for the hardware store?"

The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the distant hum of a refrigerator in the kitchen. Mark turned his gaze slowly from the paper in his hand to Tiffany’s shifting eyes, a deep, agonizing realization settling over his features like a heavy frost.

"You searched her desk," Mark stated, not as a question, but as an undeniable fact.

"I was cleaning!" Tiffany snapped, losing her temper as her facade finally shattered completely. "I was organizing the clutter she left behind because someone had to act like an adult in this house!"

Before Mark could press her further, the landline phone in the kitchen began to ring, its sharp, jarring trill cutting through the heavy tension of the foyer like a knife.

Mark hesitated, his eyes locked on Tiffany, before turning toward the kitchen.

"Don't move," Mark warned both of them.

He walked down the short hallway, picking up the receiver on the third ring. Chloe and Tiffany stood in tense silence, glaring at each other across the foyer.

"Hello?" Mark’s voice echoed from the kitchen. A long pause stretched out, and then Mark gasped, dropping the receiver with a sickening clatter against the wall.
