Chapter 5 - The Blue and Red Lights

The flashing police lights cast an eerie, rhythmic strobe across the living room walls, turning the bright suburban interior into a surreal crime scene. The heavy front door was still propped open slightly, letting the cold autumn air circulate freely as two uniformed police officers stepped across the threshold.
"Mr. Miller?" the lead officer called out, his hand resting casually on his utility belt as he scanned the tense tableau in the hallway. "We received an anonymous tip regarding a domestic disturbance and potential foul play at this address."
Tiffany’s posture shifted instantly, shedding the cornered panic of a moment ago and replacing it with the practiced, aggrieved grace of an innocent citizen. She rushed past Mark and Chloe, her hands fluttering outward toward the officers.
"Oh, thank goodness you're here, Officer!" Tiffany cried out, her voice cracking with theatrical distress. "My husband is grieving, and his daughter has become completely unhinged. She’s been fabricating documents, destroying property, and now they’re accusing me of harming Sarah. It’s utter madness!"
Chloe’s jaw dropped as she watched Tiffany rewrite reality in real-time. "She’s lying! She forged the timeline, and she threw me out of the house just ten minutes ago!"
"Quiet down, miss," the second officer said, stepping toward Chloe and eyeing the red marks still visible across her cheek. "Ma'am, how did you get those bruises on your face?"
Chloe pointed a trembling finger straight at Tiffany. "She hit me! She pushed me out the door and told me I didn't belong here!"
Tiffany gasped, pressing her hands to her cheeks in feigned horror. "She fell on the porch steps during her tantrum! I tried to catch her, officer, I swear I did. Ask my husband—he just walked in and saw how out of control she was."
The officers turned their attention to Mark, waiting for the head of the household to validate the narrative. Mark stood frozen in the kitchen doorway, the medical bill clutched tightly in his fist, his eyes shifting from the police officers to Tiffany, and finally to his daughter.
"Mark, tell them," Tiffany urged, her voice dropping into a desperate, pleading whisper as she stepped close to him. "Tell them she's making it all up."
Mark looked down at the floor, where the stray coins and keys still lay scattered from the hallway table. He thought of the unsigned will, the suspicious medical bills, and the chilling voicemail that had played just minutes before. He slowly raised his head, meeting the lead officer’s steady gaze.
"Officer," Mark began, his voice completely steady now, carrying a weight that demanded absolute attention. "I need you to secure the house and detain my wife. We have a homicide investigation to open."

Tiffany’s jaw dropped, her theatrical performance evaporating into a mask of pure, murderous rage as she lunged for the front door. But before she could cross the threshold, the officer grabbed her wrist, and a heavy wooden box fell out of the lining of her blue cardigan, bursting open on the hardwood floor to reveal Sarah’s missing wedding ring and a collection of blank medical prescription pads.
