Chapter 1: The Chandelier Falls Silent**

Julian felt the room blur. The laughter of New York’s elite faded into a hollow roar. His fingers dug into the boy’s small shoulders. "Say that again," Julian breathed, his chest heaving under his velvet tuxedo.

The child’s eyes were calm, far too still for an eight-year-old. "He said you’d remember the river. He said you owe him."

Ten years ago, Julian had walked away from the icy waters of the Blackwood River while Scott, his best friend and brother-in-arms, took the fall for an elite syndicate's betrayal. Julian built an empire on blood money and guilt, wearing Scott’s engraved steel watch as his daily penance. Everyone believed Scott was dead.

Julian pulled the boy into the hallway away from the gala. "Where is he, kid?"
