Chapter 7 - The Breached Nursery

Julian sprinted up the grand staircase with Thomas hot on his heels, their heavy footsteps pounding against the wooden steps in a chaotic rhythm. The serene silence of the estate was shattered once again, replaced by the rising panic of a home under siege. As Julian reached the second-floor landing, he rushed past the American flag and bolted straight down the hallway toward the east wing where the nursery was located. The heavy white door of the baby’s room stood wide open, the cool evening air rushing in through a shattered stained-glass window that cast colorful, broken shards across the plush carpet.
Maria was standing in the center of the room, trembling violently as she clutched little Leo—who was now screaming at the top of his lungs—against her chest in the wrap sling. A large, jagged brick lay on the floor amidst the broken glass and colorful window fragments, bearing a taped note wrapped tightly around its center with heavy twine.
“Are you hurt?” Julian demanded, rushing to Maria’s side and scanning her for any signs of physical injury while gently checking on the crying infant.
“I’m fine, sir! Just terrified,” Maria sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks as she pointed a shaking finger toward the window. “A man climbed up the trellis outside, threw the brick through the glass, and dropped that note before jumping back down into the garden!”
Thomas walked over to the shattered window, looking down into the moonlit courtyard below where distant footsteps could still be heard crunching across the gravel driveway. He picked up the brick, carefully untying the heavy twine and peeling back the outer layer of cheap brown paper to reveal a hastily scrawled message written in black marker.
“What does it say?” Julian asked, handing a calmed Leo back to Maria to hold securely while he stepped over to inspect the evidence.
Thomas handed the note over without a word. Julian read the bold, jagged letters under the harsh nursery lights, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
“Drop the charges against Eleanor, or the next brick won’t miss the crib.”
“It’s an inside job,” Thomas muttered, crossing his arms as he surveyed the ransacked room. “Someone on your legal team or within your security detail is still feeding her information. They knew exactly when the guards would be changing shifts at the west gate.”
Julian stared at the note, a cold realization washing over him. Victoria Vance had arrived at the holding cell remarkably fast, and she had access to files that even the local police department hadn’t fully cataloged yet. Could his own chief legal counsel be entangled in Eleanor’s web of criminal deceit?
“Maria, take Leo down to the reinforced panic room in the basement immediately,” Julian ordered, his voice commanding and absolute. “Lock the door from the inside and do not open it for anyone—not even me—unless I give you the specific passcode we agreed upon this morning.”
“Yes, Mr. Sterling. I’m going right now,” Maria whispered, clutching the baby tightly and hurrying out of the nursery toward the service elevator.
Julian turned to Thomas, his eyes burning with a dangerous resolve that matched the severity of the crisis.

“If my legal team is compromised, then we can’t trust the police station either,” Julian said quietly. “We need to go down to the basement archives right now and pull the financial records of every single person who has worked for Sterling Enterprises in the last decade.”
