Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

Through the billowing smoke of the shattered doorway stepped a figure clad in a dark tactical jumpsuit, holding a heavy-caliber firearm with professional precision. As the smoke cleared, the figure lowered their tactical helmet, revealing a face that made Julian’s heart stop beating entirely. It wasn’t an assassin hired by Arthur, and it wasn’t an unknown mercenary. It was Victoria Vance, out on a provisional bail arranged by an unknown offshore account, holding a smoking detonator in her left hand and a cold, psychotic smile across her lips.
“Did you really think a simple holding cell could keep me away from my work, Julian?” Victoria asked smoothly, stepping over the ruined wood of the doorway and pointing her weapon directly at his chest.
“You’re insane, Victoria,” Julian said, keeping his voice remarkably steady as he slowly placed his hands flat on the desk to keep the attention off Thomas and Maria, who were slipping toward the private side exit. “The federal marshals are already on their way up the service stairs. You have nowhere left to run.”
“I don’t need to run anymore,” Victoria laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed off the high windows of the penthouse. “Arthur’s accounts have already been transferred to a decentralized crypto wallet, and Eleanor is currently being transferred to a low-security medical facility where her new escape team is waiting for her transport van.”
Julian realized then that everything—the arrest, the boardroom coup, the police intervention—had been a meticulously orchestrated diversion designed to get Eleanor out of maximum security and into a position where she could disappear permanently with the remaining corporate funds.
