Chapter 12 - The Proxy War

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom slammed open before Arthur could finish his threat, and two federal marshals stepped into the room, their badges gleaming sharply under the recessed lighting. The room erupted into immediate chaos as several board members stood up in alarm, whispering frantically among themselves while Arthur froze in place, his hand hovering over the back of his chair like a trapped animal.
“Arthur Sterling,” the lead federal marshal announced clearly, pulling a warrant from his jacket pocket. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit industrial sabotage against Sterling Enterprises.”
Arthur’s face turned an ash-gray color as the heavy steel handcuffs were snapped around his wrists with a sharp, echoing click. He cast one final, venomous glare toward his nephew as the marshals hauled him toward the exit, his voice dripping with malice as he passed by Julian’s chair.
“You might keep the company today, Julian,” Arthur spat, straining against the officers holding his arms. “But you’ll never find out where the real money went or who else in your inner circle is waiting to tear you apart!”
The double doors closed behind them with a heavy thud, leaving the boardroom in a stunned, suffocating silence. Julian slowly sank back down into his leather chair, exhaling a long, ragged breath that felt like a lifetime of weight finally lifting from his chest. He looked around the table at the remaining board members, whose expressions had shifted from skepticism to absolute, unquestioning deference.
“The emergency vote is cancelled,” Julian announced quietly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “We have work to do.”
Hours later, after the emergency board meeting concluded and the restructuring plans were securely put into motion, Julian finally returned to his private penthouse office overlooking the sprawling New York skyline. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm, golden glow across the floor-to-ceiling windows. He sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at a small, encrypted tablet that Victoria Vance had left behind in her cell—a device that supposedly contained the final piece of the puzzle regarding Eleanor’s true origins and the whereabouts of her missing inheritance.
Maria knocked softly on the open office door before stepping inside, carrying a fresh cup of black coffee and setting it gently down on the corner of the desk.
“Leo is asleep in the secure nursery downstairs, Mr. Sterling,” Maria said softly, noticing the deep exhaustion etched into Julian’s features. “You should rest. You haven’t slept properly in forty-eight hours.”
“I can’t sleep yet, Maria,” Julian replied, tapping the screen of the tablet to wake it from sleep mode. “There’s one last file on here that hasn’t been decrypted, and it requires a biometric master key that only Eleanor possessed.”
“Or someone who knew her before she changed her name,” a voice rasped from the doorway.
Julian and Maria both spun around in shock as Thomas stepped out from the private antechamber of the office, holding an old, water-damaged cassette tape and a small metal key that looked identical to the one Eleanor had kept locked in her personal jewelry box.
“Where did you find that?” Julian asked, standing up from his desk in utter disbelief.

“In Eleanor’s private safety deposit box at the downtown branch,” Thomas said grimly, walking over and placing the key right next to the encrypted tablet. “She kept a backup of every single lie she ever told, including the recording of the night my sister disappeared.”
